The 2023-24 season hasn’t officially begun yet, but teams are beginning to return in official capacities with the season a few weeks away. The Philadelphia Flyers, with rookie camp now complete, will meet for the start of main training camp. The camp will run through the next few weeks as the team looks to solidify its roster for the upcoming season.

57 players will take to the ice starting on Thursday and will practice in three different sessions, including instrasquad scrimmages as well. If it’s anything like last year’s training camp, these players will be put through the ringer. There’s nothing like a John Tortorella training camp to get you ready for the regular season.

Forwards

A total of 30 forwards are on the camp roster. The most notable names are Sean Couturier and Cam Atkinson as both are expected to take full part in all activities. Speaking ahead of camp, Danny Briere confirmed that all players are healthy. Now it will be about what kind of shape the two above players are in. It has been almost two full seasons since Couturier has played while Atkinson missed the last year.

Eyes will also be on the likes of Tyson Foerster, Elliot Desnoyers, and Bobby Brink. The three are coming off a so-so rookie camp and will need to turn it up in order to find themselves on the NHL roster come October.

Defense

Amongst the defenseman, there will be a few battles for not so many spots. With the signing of Marc Staal and acquisition of Sean Walker, there isn’t a lot of room on the back end. But someone like Emil Andrae could change the minds of the Flyers’ staff with a strong camp. Ronnie Attard will also be looking for a full time NHL spot after spending last season in the AHL. Adam Ginning could challenge for some time while Helge Grans will have his first audition in a new organization. Egor Zamula, after re-signing with the Flyers, will also be trying to solidly a role.

Goaltenders

The battle at goaltender will likely be for the backup role, unless anything changes with Carter Hart. At this time, the Flyers expect to have him at training camp and have not been told anything else according to Briere. So for now, expect a combination of Cal Petersen, Sam Ersson, and Felix Sandstrom to compete for the backup spot.
