Philadelphia Flyers blown out by Islanders 6-1
The Philadelphia Flyers hosted the New York Islanders looking for their fifth win of the season.
Coming off another loss on Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers took on the New York Islanders hoping to stop their losing streak at two games.
Michal Neuvirth made his season debut for the team, opposing Robin Lehner. Neuvirth suffered a groin injury back in training camp, and was sidelined for about a month. Mikhail Vorobyev made his return to the lineup, replacing Jordan Weal, and Andrew MacDonald was a late healthy scratch in favor of Christian Folin.
The teams traded chances to begin the first period, with Lehner making a big save on a Jakub Voracek one-timer during that span. The Flyers received the games’ first power-play after Oskar Lindblom drew a hooking penalty on Brock Nelson. Neither unit could get anything going, and New York killed the penalty with relative ease. The Islanders scored the first goal of the game after Leo Komarov deflected a shot past Neuvirth into the net. It was Komarov’s second goal of the year.

New York would score again soon after on a goal from Anthony Beauvillier, his first goal and point of the year. Towards the end of the period, Ivan Provorov absolutely leveled Mathew Barzal in the neutral zone, which led to a bit of a scrum. The Islanders ended up taking a roughing penalty, giving the Flyers a chance to cut the lead to one. Once again, they couldn’t get anything going and New York led the period 2-0. The Flyers had the shots-on-goal advantage, 7-6.
The second period kicked off with Shayne Gostisbehere taking a delay of game penalty just six seconds in. The Flyers killed it off, keeping it a 2-0 game. New York would go on to score another goal soon after on a shot from Nelson assisted by Josh Bailey. The Flyers responded as Jori Lehtera beat Lehner for his first goal of the season, cutting the lead from three to two. Voracek took a high sticking penalty later on in the period, giving the Islanders their second man advantage. The Flyers would again kill it off and kept the game 3-1 to end the stanza.
Corban Knight left the game late in the first and did not return to the game due to a upper-body injury. Scott Mayfield took a interference minor and gave Philadelphia their third power play of the night early in the third period. Again, nobody could find the back of the net as the Islanders killed the penalty. Adam Pelech would give New York a three goal lead after sniping a shot past Neuvirth. Nelson added to the lead not long after, and the Islanders won the game 6-1.
This was easily the Flyers worst performance of the season. Changes have to be made after getting absolutely embarrassed in front of your home crowd.
The Flyers will head to the west coast to take on the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night. Hopefully, they’ll actually decide to show up for this one.
