The Philadelphia Flyers were hoping to extend their winning streak to three against the San Jose Sharks on the road.

After defeating the Los Angles Kings 5-2 on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers looked to complete the sweep of the state of California as they took on the Sharks in San Jose.

Calvin Pickard got the start, as Michal Neuvirth was sent back to Philadelphia to be examined by their team doctor. He opposed Martin Jones in-net, who had a 5-3-1 record with a 2.66 Goals-Against Average and a .902 save percentage. Pickard came in with a 2-1-0 record ,a 4.73 GAA, and a .833 save percentage.

The Flyers started off the game with a bang, as Nolan Patrick netted the game’s first goal just 37 seconds in and made it 1-0. Oskar Lindblom and Travis Konecny assisted on the goal, and Lindblom extended his point streak to two games. The Sharks responded minutes later, as Timo Meier tied it up at one a piece for his tenth goal on the year. San Jose received the games’ first power-play as Konecny went to the box for slashing.

Philadelphia would kill off the penalty in large part due to Pickard making some big saves during the opportunity. After the Sharks dominated most of the period, Jordan Weal gave the Flyers the lead as he scored his second goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game. Meier took a holding penalty soon after, and gave the Flyers their first power-play on the evening. San Jose would end up killing off most of the time, as there was just twelve second of power-play time left over to start the second.

The second period started with San Jose killing the remaining power-play time. Eric Karlsson would take a delay of game penalty less than three minutes in, giving the Flyers their second man advantage of the game. Philadelphia had nothing going, as they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Claude Giroux took a hooking penalty later in the period and Joe Pavelski took advantage, tying the game up at two. Jakub Voracek would score goal on a delayed penalty late in the period, and gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead at the end of the second.

Radko Gudas took a tripping penalty to begin the third, and gave the Sharks their third power-play opportunity of the game. This wouldn’t cost the Flyers, as they killed off the tripping minor. San Jose took a too many men penalty halfway through the period, giving Philadelphia a chance to extend their lead to two.

The Sharks killed the penalty with ease, getting a couple shorthanded chances in the process. Joe Thornton would capitalize on the Flyers misfortunes, scoring his first goal of the season and tying the game at three with just under five minutes left in the period. 60 minutes of hockey wouldn’t be enough, as the teams entered overtime tied up at three.

Meier would win the game for the Sharks in overtime with his second goal of the game, giving them the 4-3 victory.

The Flyers are now 6-7-1 on the season. Next game is Monday against the Arizona Coyotes.
