Philadelphia Flyers reportedly hire Chuck Fletcher as General Manager
The Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly found their new General Manager.
After relieving Ron Hextall of his General Managerial duties last week, the Philadelphia Flyers have reportedly hired Chuck Fletcher as the newest GM of the team.
Fletcher, 51, most recently served as a Senior Adviser to the General Manager for the New Jersey Devils and was considered the Flyers top candidate for the position. He also has experience as a General Manager as well, working for the Minnesota Wild from 2009-18. The Wild made the playoffs in six of the nine seasons with Fletcher as GM, and made some solid trades while with the club.
One of the best trades he made was acquiring forward Nino Niederreiter from the New York Islanders for forward Cal Clutterbuck and a third round pick back in 2013. Niederreiter has since had a solid career in Minnesota, posting over 30 points in every season with the team.

He also obtained goaltender Devan Dubnyk for a third round pick in 2015, who went on to become one of the best goalies in hockey for the Wild. Fletcher actually said that the Wild “got lucky” in acquiring the 2004 First round pick and that nobody “would’ve expected that he would’ve fit in as well as he had.”
I think that him acquiring Dubnyk could be a testament for his ability in finding goaltending talent in the NHL. He stated that Dubnyk was one of two or three options currently on the trade market at that time, and him finding a diamond in the rough could help the Flyers this time around as well.
Fletcher will have plenty of work to get done with this Flyers team. Philadelphia doesn’t currently have an Assistant General Manager and are in need of another Assistant Coach after firing Gord Murphy along with Chris Pryor a couple days after letting Hextall go. It will also be interesting to see if he keeps Head Coach Dave Hakstol on board for the remainder of the season.
It’s possible that Fletcher gives Hakstol the rest of the year to try and dig the Flyers out of there bottom of the Eastern Conference, but he may want to get his own hire in the position as soon as possible too.
We will again have to play a game of wait-and-see with Fletcher at the helm. It is expected that the Flyers will officially announce his hiring on Wednesday with a press conference. Welcome to the Fletcher-era, Flyers fans.
