How have the nine Philadelphia Flyers players fared in this year’s World Championship tournament?
Sitting over a week into the 2019 IIHF World Championships, it’s time to take a look at how each of the Philadelphia Flyers has progressed representing their respective countries. The Flyers have nine players skating in Slovakia, playing for five different countries.
Starting with Team Canada, Sean Couturier has netted two points (1 Goal, 1 Assist) in five games with the club. He did an excellent job in shutting down Team Germany’s top player, Leon Draisaitl, which helped the Canadians reach an 8-1 victory and give the Germans their first loss of the tournament. Carter Hart has stopped all but two of the 35 shots he’s faced in two games of action, which gives him a 1.00 Goals-Against Average with a .943 save percentage to boot. Philippe Myers, who joined Canada a couple of days ago, has zero points in two games played but has shown flashes of skill during those contests.
Jakub Voracek, who’s representing the Team Czech Republic, had a dominant showing in the Czech’s game against Team Latvia. Jake the Snake potted a four-point performance in the 6-3 win and has ten points (2 Goals, 8 Assists) in five games, which ties for second on the team and fourth in the entire tourney. Radko Gudas has two points in the same amount of games, with his one goal coming off a shot from the red line (yes, you read that correctly).
Oskar Lindblom’s scored four points (3 Goals, 1 Assist) in five games with Team Sweden and has been unable to score in just one of those five contests. He’s created some solid scoring chances and looked like one of Sweden’s best Bottom-6 forwards, if not the best, so far. Robert Hagg is one of two Swedish players who have yet to score a point in the Worlds and honestly hasn’t done anything of note outside of taking a few penalties.
James van Riemsdyk has scored three points (1 Goal, 2 Assists) for Team USA while Michael Raffl has two assists for Team Austria, both in five games. Raffl is second on Austria in scoring with that point-total, showing the low level of talent on their squad.
The World Championships will keep rolling on, with preliminary play ending on the 23rd. As for Flyers related action, JvR and the United States will take on Germany while the Voracek and the Czechs face Raffl and the Austrians on Sunday morning. You can catch the United States game on NHL Network at 10 am EST.
