The Philadelphia Flyers will have a total of nine prospects playing overseas this upcoming year.

Finishing up on our prospects to watch series, the Philadelphia Flyers have a solid crop of young talent getting ready, or already playing in euro leagues for the 2019-20 season. Some of the prospects have been in the system for a decent amount of time, and likely won’t see NHL action at any point during their hockey careers, while others were drafted a year or two ago and still have bright futures ahead of them. General Manager Chuck Fletcher didn’t take one European prospect during the 2019 NHL Draft this past June, selecting mostly American and Canadian talents, but that doesn’t mean the Flyers don’t have a few prospects worth watching throughout this next year.

One of the prospects fans should follow is Samuel Ersson. I ranked Ersson among the Top Five Flyers goaltending prospects currently in the pipeline, and for a good reason. The Swedish net-minder had a stellar season in the Allsvenskan league in 2018-19, posting a 1.95 Goals Against Average with a .933 save percentage in 36 games playing for Västerås IK and earned plenty of awards for his efforts.

Ersson will now set his sights on the SHL for the 2019-20 campaign and has already suited up for Brynas IF, making 32 saves on 35 shots in a 6-3 preseason victory. It’ll be interesting to see how he fairs against SHL-level talent because if he performs well, Ersson will not only insert himself as the Flyers best goaltending prospect but as one of the best around the league.

The next European talent to keep tabs on is Adam Ginning. The 2018 Second Round pick netted five points (1 Goal, 4 Assists) in 48 games with Linköping HC in the SHL this past year. That may not seem like much, and to be fair it isn’t, but it’s worth noting that Ginning is more of a defensive defenseman and isn’t heavily relied upon in the offensive zone. He did post two assists in five games at the World Junior Summer Showcase in late July and early August, showing that he can chip in offensively when needed. This season will be Ginning’s second full year in the SHL, and if he once again holds his own in a league amongst men, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2020-21.

Others to monitor are Linus Hogberg and David Bernhardt, who could’ve been in Lehigh Valley this year had Fletcher opted to bring them over. It might take a little time before fans see any of the players I’ve listed suit up for the Flyers, but all certainly have the potential to do so.
