The Philadelphia Flyers mascot seems to be in the holiday spirit, consistently giving cakes to people’s faces at the Wells Fargo Center.
Folks, I am happy to inform you that Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty is up to old tricks. The furry, orange creature has dived deep into the holiday season by criticizing a rather ugly, Gritty-themed tree on his Twitter account, dressing up as Santa Claus for the second-straight year in the name of “Gritmas,” and doing the can-can with the Flyers Ice Girls before the puck dropped against the New York Rangers on Monday. He didn’t stop there, though, as Gritty has grown very fond of the spirit of gift-giving by throwing cakes at people and rival fans to try and spread some holiday cheer at the Farg.
This tradition, for lack of a better term, began a week ago during Philadelphia’s 4-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Gritty decided to play a completely normal game of Duck, Duck, Gray Duck (I’m from Minnesota, it’s Gray Duck you heathens) with a couple of people in the crowd and, once he chose his victim, ran and tossed a full sheet cake at the guy’s head while he was being chased. Scripted or not, which it more than like was, that looked like it hurt a bit. I’ve got to give the mascot some credit here, too, as it’s a lot more difficult to throw a cake in that quick of fashion than he made it seem.
Gritty followed that up by finding another cake casualty during the previous mentioned Rangers game, which the Flyers also won in case you forgot. A blindfolded Ranger fan was opening up a present alongside one of the in-arena personalities and was greeted by not one, but two fully iced, sugary delights from the Orange and Black’s national icon. I would feel for the guy if he weren’t a New York fan because that second cake had him reevaluating his whole life. Once again, both throws Gritty made were, at worst, solid heaves, and if the Philadelphia Phillies need another arm in the rotation or bullpen this summer, they may want to get in touch with the Gritty Guards.
As we’ve seen in the past, Gritty will seemingly never stop trolling the masses and I wouldn’t be surprised if another person found themself with a face full of frosting the next time they take a trip to the WFC for a Flyers game.
