The streak is now at eight games as the Flyers handled the Hurricanes on Thursday night.

The Flyers came into Thursday night’s matchup looking for their eighth consecutive win. This was the second half of a back to back for the team. Their opponent, the Carolina Hurricanes, have been off since February 29th. The Hurricanes won the last game between the two while the Flyers won the previous two battles.

With Brian Elliott taking the game against the Washington Capitals, it would be Carter Hart in net for the Flyers while the Hurricanes went with Alex Nedeljkovic.

It was a rather sluggish first period for the most part. The Canes best chance came when they hemmed in the Laughton-Grant-Pitlick line for what felt like minutes. They kept themselves mostly on the perimeter and didn’t fire off many shots. For the Flyers, they had a few odd man rushes that they couldn’t do too much with.

Towards the end of the period, the Flyers would grab the lead thanks to Ivan Provorov. After Derek Grant dumped the puck in, Scott Laughton was able to win a board battle and found Provorov streaking in. With all kinds of room, Provorov sent the shot in on Nedeljkovic and followed up on the rebound. He tucked it just behind the diving Canes’ goaltender. The Flyers would end the period with the 1-0 lead.

The Flyers got their first power play chance in the second as Joel Edmundson went off for holding the stick. They couldn’t really make anything happen, registering just one shot. They were given another power play a few minutes later as Jordan Martinook was called for tripping. The Flyers once again registered a single shot.

They would score a second goal not long after the power play ended, though. Michael Raffl scored his 12th of the season off the feed from Tyler Pitlick. Scott Laughton created the turnover in the Flyers zone and grabbed his second point of the game as well.

Justin Williams broke the shutout bid for Carter Hart and got the Canes on the board a little less than three minutes into the third. He was stationed in front and got the tip in off a feed from Jordan Staal.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel gave the Flyers their two goal lead back less than two minutes after off a fluky play in front. After Nate Thompson couldn’t make a play, he knocked the puck over to Aubé-Kubel. It was a bouncing puck and he ended up shooting it from behind the goal line. It banked off of Nedeljkovic and in the net.

Sean Couturier increased the lead to 4-1 just 26 seconds later. Claude Giroux sent a pass in front to Jakub Voracek. Voracek tried to spin around and fire a shot in. Couturier pounced on the rebound and lifted it over a sprawling Nedeljkovic.

Carter Hart came up big throughout the rest of the period and didn’t allow the Canes to climb back in. The Flyers took this one by a score of 4-1. The Capitals lost, in overtime though, so the two teams are tied for first place. The Caps hold the tie breaker.

The team will get some rest as they’ll take on the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm at the Wells Fargo Center.
