A tough blow to the young Flyers defensemen who was having a solid season.

The Flyers were hit were some tough injury news this evening. Defensemen Philippe Myers will miss the next four weeks with a fractured patella in his right knee.

Four weeks from tonight would put Myers at April 7th. That’s three days after the Flyers regular-season finale against Buffalo. So Myers is likely to miss at least the rest of the regular season.

The injury stemmed when Myers blocked a shot against the Sabres on Saturday night. He headed directly to the locker room but would end up returning for a few shifts. He took part in practice yesterday but ended up leaving early.

Alain Vigneault listed him as a game-time decision. The original injury was thought to just be a bone bruise of some sort but turned out to be much worse.

In the meantime, Shayne Gostisbehere will return to the lineup for the first time since February sixth. He will slot in net to Robert Hagg for at least tonight’s game.

It’s a tough break for Myers as he was coming into his own on the second pairing with Travis Sanheim. Among regular defensive pairs, the two had a 51.56 CF% which ranked second.

Myers himself had four goals and 12 assists in 50 games during his first full season with the team.

While it had to come via an injury, this will be a good test for Gostisbehere to prove he is fully healthy again. He had played in one game after his arthroscopic knee surgery, though it had turned out the knee wasn’t quite healed yet.

If a call-up is to come in the near future, it will likely take place after the Flyers game against Boston. Mark Friedman would likely be the one coming up when and if the team decides to make a move.
