The Flyers prospect won’t come to North America until at least the 2022 season. Fedotov recently signed an extension with his KHL team.

Drafted by the Flyers in 2015, Ivan Fedotov has spent his entire career in the various leagues in Russia. Whether that be in the MHL, VHL, or most notably, the KHL. That’s where he will be spending the next few seasons.

Fedotov and Traktor Chelyabinsk agreed on an extension that will keep the Flyers prospect with the team until after the 2021-22 season. So the earliest we are likely to see Fedotov would be starting with the 2022 season.

It’s not necessarily a surprise to see him remain in the KHL. That is where the playing time is going to come for him right now. He is lower on the Flyers depth chart at the moment. Kirill Ustimenko and Felix Sandstrom are likely to fight for AHL time next season.

This opportunity gives Fedotov the chance to build off of a strong season. He broke out for Traktor Chelyabinsk this past year. As the team’s starter, he posted a 2.10 GAA and a .931 SV%. At 23 years of age, he had the 10th best save percentage in the entire KHL. His goals against average ranked 16th in the league.

Taking a look at all goaltenders under the age of 24, Fedotov was first in SV% and second in GAA. It was his first true chance as a starter in the KHL and he ran with it.

He had small opportunities in the league before. The most KHL games he saw in a season before this year was just three, though. Fedotov had a total of five KHL games to his name before coming into this season.

He had performed well throughout his time in the MHL. He had also performed extremely well in the VHL as well. During his previous season, Fedotov appeared in 26 games for Toros Neftekamsk. He posted a 1.67 GAA and a .929 SV%. He wasn’t even the clear cut starter on the team either. But that season proved that he could handle a starting role.

And he carried that over into the KHL this season. He’ll look to do the same during the next two seasons as he continues to develop his game in the Russian league.

Fedotov has been a dark horse in the Flyers goaltending group. We may just have to wait a bit longer to get a chance to see him in North Anerica.
