Their second goaltender in the draft is one that hasn’t worked out well for either the team nor the player. Matej Tomek was taken in the third round as well. He looked good coming into the draft. During his first and only season in the NAHL, Tomek posted an impressive 1.83 GAA and a .928 SV%. That came splitting time in net with Drew Vogler.

Recruited to play at the University of North Dakota, trouble began to brew. Tomek did not appear in a single game during his freshman season. He played just two games in 2016-17, posting an abysmal 7.46 GAA and .692 SV%. He decided to leave North Dakota and instead headed to the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL.

Before trying the collegiate route again, he posted solid numbers for the Hawks. In 30 games, Tomek had a 2.39 GAA and a .907 SV%. He moved on to the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he once again could not get his feet wet in the college game. In just five games, Tomek posted a 4.73 GAA and a .845 SV%.

That was it for the college game as Tomek spent last season in Slovakia with HK Dukla Trencin. He looked good there as well in 32 games. As the team’s starter, Tomek posted a 2.34 GAA and a .927 SV%.

Tomek has the talent to be a starting goaltender. But he couldn’t find his footing in the NCAA. And he seemingly gave up when things weren’t going his way. The Flyers do still hold his rights until August of 2021. However, it seems like a long shot that he will ever suit up for them.
