Fresh off of the first day of training camp, the Flyers have signed Mark Friedman to a two-year extension.

The Philadelphia Flyers returned to the Voorhees Skate Zone as training camp is underway. And they’ve already made some moves not even a few hours after they began. Mark Friedman has signed on for another two years.

The young defensemen agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension. The deal will kick in starting in the 2020-21 season. He is coming off his third professional season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

The deal is a hefty raise from what he was making during his previous contract. Not including any bonuses, Friedman was making $70K. He will now be earning an AAV of $725K.

This deal gives him a chance to compete for a permanent spot on the Flyers next season. He is expected to be among the players who will be traveling to Toronto for the playoffs. He won’t play unless the team runs into injuries on the back end. But it will be a good experience for him to learn from the veterans and experience how tough the NHL postseason can be.

Friedman had a chance to skate in a few NHL games this season. While his time was brief, he didn’t look out of place in the six games he appeared in. He also grabbed his first NHL point. Friedman had been called up before the season was paused when Philippe Myers went down. Before that, he had one other NHL game under his belt.

During his time with the Phantoms this season, he posted three goals and 18 points in 45 games. Friedman was drafted by the Flyers in 2014 and has steadily make his way up the depth chart among other defensemen.

The new contract shows the faith the Flyers have in Friedman and what he can bring going forward. It is not a guarantee he makes the team next season, but he will have the security of remaining in the organization for the next two years.
