It’s never too early to look ahead to next year’s playoffs as the Flyers once again find themselves highly rated in the odds for the next Stanley Cup.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have barely been Stanley Cup Champions and we are already looking ahead to next year. And we don’t even know when that will begin. But days after the Lightning won their first since 2004, we already have the odds for the next playoffs. And for the Flyers, they are once again favored among the best in the league.

The team comes in with the fifth-best shot at taking home the Stanley Cup. It’s clear the oddsmakers saw this team’s prowess at the end of the regular season. And no doubt they took into account the Flyers storming through the round-robin to capture to Eastern Conference number one seed.

Three of the top five teams are from the Eastern Conference. Unsurprisingly, Tampa Bay has the best odds to take home the Stanley Cup once again. They were able to push past the demons of last year’s playoff and used that to fuel them this season. Now reaching the peak for the first time since 2004, they will be hungry for another one.

It is surprising to see that Dallas, who lost in the Final, has the seventh-best odds. The oddsmakers, despite the Stars making it that far, seem to have more confidence in a team like the Flyers.

While they breezed through the round-robin, they had trouble getting past Montreal in the first round. And while they pushed the Islanders to a decisive seventh game, their stars’ inability to score finally came back to bite them in the end. And not to mention a power play that was basically nonexistent.

They should have a very similar team returning next season. They have two restricted free agents left to sign and should be getting them locked up shortly. Most of their unrestricted free agents will probably move on to other teams.

It’s possible the Flyers could make some moves in free agency. Shayne Gostisbehere could finally find himself traded. Bobby Ryan said he wouldn’t mind coming to Philadelphia if there was mutual interest. And the team has found themselves in the rumors of Patrik Laine.

There is a reason to be optimistic about what this Flyers team is capable of doing. After a season of finding out what kind of team we will have under Alain Vigneault, there is no reason to believe this team won’t be competing for quite some time.
