The fifth rounder is already proving the Flyers right early on in his season.
Teams aren’t always expected to find value when it comes to the later rounds of the draft. Sometimes you hit on those picks and sometimes this miss. That’s the gamble you play in those rounds. Right now, it’s looking like the Flyers hit when it comes to Elliot Desnoyers.
Desnoyers spent last season in the QMJHL with the Moncton Wildcats. There he posted 11 goals and 35 points in 61 games. He had trouble standing out and finding a role with the Wildcats.
A June trade would send him to the Halifax Mooseheads. He was expected to have a bigger role in Halifax and the move is already paying dividends for Desnoyers.
With the elevated role and playing alongside a potential top pick in Zachary L’Heureux, Desnoyers is lighting it up. In just eight games the young forward has six goals and 12 points. That’s already over halfway to his goal total from last season. After a pair of two point contents before, he exploded in a game against the Cape Breton Eagles.
In a 10-2 win for Halifax, Desnoyers grabbed the first hat trick of his career. He added a fourth goal for good measure as well. That earned him CHL Player of the Night honors. He would also earn Player of the Week honors as well.
Desnoyers currently leads the Mooseheads in all offensive categories. He is third in goals and sixth in assists among the entire QMJHL. He has posted four multi-point games this season. An alternate captain for Halifax, Desnoyers is out to prove that the Flyers found value in him with their fifth round selection.
The team traded two picks to make this selection so there was something they saw that made them want to draft Desnoyers. He was not rated very highly on most draft boards due to his previous subpar performances. But the Flyers have been known to find diamonds in the rough before.
And right now, it’s looking like Desnoyers could be another one if he keeps up this fast start.
