Flyers: Checking in on Steve Mason two years after his retirement

Many Flyers fans remember former goaltender Steve Mason. Is he still playing hockey three years after his departure from the team?

Steve Mason spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. Originally being drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL entry draft and making his NHL debut in 2008 with the same team, he would go on to play for the Blue Jackets for five consecutive years.

Traded to the Flyers in 2013, Mason spent another five seasons starting at the end of the 2012-13 season and was the starting goaltender for the majority of his time with the team. He finished his time with the Flyers with a cumulative 104-78 record.

The question – what happened to Steve Mason and where did he go after he left?

Mason’s time with the team came to an end when the Winnipeg Jets signed him as an unrestricted free agent. The deal was reportedly worth $8.3 million and was for two-years. Less than a year after Mason had agreed to the deal, the Jets traded him to the Canadians.

In a subsequent move that was made just hours after Montreal had acquired him, the team sent him on waivers with the intention to buy out his contract. As expected, no club claimed him off the waivers and he was sent to free agency.
