Oskar Lindblom cancer free over a year after diagnosis
After a year that certainly tested everyone, Oskar Lindblom and the Flyers have a lot to celebrate.
It was over a year ago that Oskar Lindblom learned of his diagnosis. It was an early December day as the Flyers were on their West Coast trip. They took to the ice that night against Colorado without one of their star young forwards.
It wasn’t much after that when the Flyers officially announced Lindblom’s diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma. He would not be expected to return to action that season. Instead, his battle began off the ice.
The hockey community rallied around him as he went through all the necessary steps to return to a normal life. He went through various treatments of chemotherapy. Lindblom elected to have surgery to remove the tumor instead of going through radiation.
Lindblom rang the bell in early July, signifying the end of his cancer treatments. He was deemed to be without evidence of the cancer at that time. The Flyers opening training camp just a few weeks later and signed him to a three-year contract upon his return.
And when the team left for Toronto at the end of the month, Lindblom would end up meeting up with them afterwards.
And despite the Flyers announcing he would not return that season, he did just that. Lindblom stepped on the ice during the second round of the playoffs. It had been nine months since he last played a game. It didn’t matter, though.
Lindblom appeared in the final two games of the Islanders series, averaging close to 17 minutes a game. The points didn’t matter, in fact none of his stats did. It was the fact that he defied the odds and returned to the ice. And now over a year later, Lindblom got the greatest news of all.
Alma Lindqvist, Lindblom’s girlfriend, took to Instagram on Tuesday to let everyone know that he continued to be cancer-free after his second checkup.
“What a year! 369 days ago we found out that Oskar had cancer, and today we got to know that the scans are clear after his second checkup,”
In a time were any strand of positivity is needed, Oskar Lindblom was able to get just that.
