The Flyers 2019 first round pick will captain the United States squad during the 2021 World Juniors.

After serving as captain during the pre-tournament game, Flyers prospect Cam York was officially named captain for entirety of the World Juniors. York will be joined by alternate captains Cole Caufield and Alex Turcotte as the leadership group for the United States.

The three served in these positions on Tuesday evening when the team took on Finland. At the time, there had been no announcement on the squad’s leadership. This group of players turned out to be who the team chose in the end.

After being limited in last year’s tournament due to a high ankle sprain, York is poised to take on an even bigger role this year. He is certainly expected to be the team’s star defenseman. While he didn’t grab a point in the opening game, he put on a strong showing. The US spent a lot of time on the power play as York ran the unit when he was on the ice.

York has spent a few years within the United States Development Program. He broke out with the U18 team before he was drafted by the Flyers. He also shined at the World Juniors that year, posting the most goals, assists, and points by a defensemen.

"“I’m humbled by the guys naming me captain,” said York. “This is a huge honor, and I’m excited for what this team can do. I think this is not just a really talented team, but it’s a great group of guys who really care about one another and have come together well as a team.”"

York is currently in his sophomore year at Michigan. In his eight games thus far, he has posted two goals and has five points overall. Along with Caufield and Turcotte, York will help captain the United States starting this Friday when they open preliminary round play against Russia.
