In some shocking news, Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher announced that Sam Morin will be playing in a new position to begin the upcoming season slated to start in January.

More from Broad Street Buzz

Sam Morin, who has played defense since making his NHL debut in 2016, will be a forward to start the 2021 season. More specifically, according to Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher, Morin will be playing in the left winger position.

When the team drafted Morin back in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, the expectation was he would be a valuable asset to the team’s defense and he sure did meet those expectations.

The sudden move sparked some confusion across the hockey world, however it’s totally possible Morin’s transition to becoming a forward will be executed flawlessly and he will absolutely flourish in his new position.

This news came as a bit of a shock to fans, as the move doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. While his linemates for now are unknown and the team has some mixing and matching to do to find Morin a good pair of linemates and in a line where he will flourish the most and be just as effective as a forward as he was a defenseman.

With the season just a few weeks away, Morin will have to make quite the adjustment quickly in order to be ready for the start of the season. The Flyers are scheduled to play the Pittsburgh Penguins to start the season at the Wells Fargo Center.
