The National Hockey League announced on Tuesday morning that they have fined Flyers forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel. The incident occurred in the third period of Monday night’s brutal lost against the Sabres at the Wells Fargo Center shortly after NAK scored a goal to erase the Sabres’ potential shutout.
Aube-Kubel was fined $4,633.62 for roughing Buffalo’s Rasmus Dahlin just minutes after he had scored the first and only goal for the Flyers on Monday night. The fine amount is the maximum allowed under the CBA. It’s good that he wasn’t suspended as it did appear to be pretty brutal. This is the first time Aube-Kubel has received a fine from the National Hockey League.
The fine was heavily expected by some, and it finally came down. NAK will forfeit a portion of his salary this year to pay the fine. It’s not that big of a deal considering it’s only $4,000 compared to some other fines that are issued by the NHL that are a bit higher.
NAK was sent to the box with a double minor for a high-stick but in video from the broadcast of the game last night it appeared that the stick never made contact with Dahlin, but his hands did.
The young 24-year-old winger has picked up two points in three games played this season. NAK is in his third year with the Philadelphia Flyers, as he debuted with the team back in the 2018-2019 hockey season. Last season, he put up 15 points in 36 games played for the Flyers.
Aube-Kubel spent three full seasons with the Flyers’ AHL team Lehigh Valley Phantoms before being called-up to the NHL. He was drafted by Philadelphia in the 2014 NHL Entry draft, and ended up being selected in the second round with the 18th pick.
