The Flyers did not have a good game against Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. The Penguins come away with the win on this match-up as Philadelphia fall to 11-5-3 this season.

The final score of Tuesday night’s game

Here is a period-by-period breakdown of tonight’s game.

First Period:

The Flyers and the Penguins looked to be feeling each other out for the first 20 minutes of the game. The Penguins came out with some good speed and energy with their fans in the building but at 1:36, Zach Aston-Reese takes a bad tripping call on Phil Myers. It was also a dangerous play as you see him board Myers at the end and Myers’ head hits against the glass.

This is exactly where you want the Penguins to be considering they are ranked 29th with a PK percentage of 72.1%. The Flyers looked very good creating chances on that power play. A little over 2 minutes later, Mike Matheson caught Sean Couturier up high with his stick. The Flyers had some good dangerous chances but the Penguins had some great chances of their own, but our young net-minder was able to make some really fantastic saves on some high danger chances by the Penguins.

At the end of the first period, The Flyers outshot the Penguins 14-5, won 57.1% of face-offs, had 10 blocked shots, and had 9 hits to the Penguins 11. The Flyers had 1 more giveaway than the Penguins did but overall not a bad period for the Flyers.

Second Period:

The Flyers killed off that first penalty and seemed to get some momentum. They began clogging the middle of the ice and almost as if it were clockwork, Sean Couturier and Joel Farabee connect for Farabee’s 9th goal of the year. The Flyers seemed to begin to buzz but then the unthinkable happens. Shayne Gostisbehere attempts to go across the ice and Kasperi Kapanen jumps on the pass to get a breakaway on Hart and connects with a slick head fake to open up Hart and puts it 5 holes for his 4th of the year at 3:39 of the period.

The Penguins seemed to come to life at that moment and they draw an interference penalty on Raffl, which seemed like he was just playing the man, but nevertheless, the Penguins go on the power play. At the end of the period, The Penguins outshot Philadelphia14-12. The Flyers won 61% of the face-offs and 3 blocked shots.

Third Period:

The Flyers started this period on the power play and could again not put one home. They were looking more to set up than shoot the puck. As the game has gone on, the Flyers have gotten worse on their power play. They then got another penalty in this period at 2:13 as Sam Lafferty went to the box for slashing against Scott Laughton but once again, they came up short. The Flyers were finally able to get another one past Jarry at 11:00 as Farabee puts home a rebound shot that Jarry was unable to lockdown.

Farabee gets his 10th of the year as he continues to have the hot stick and who else would be assisting on this goal but JVR (16th) and Sanheim(6th). The Flyers looked poised to make a push, but the Penguins had other ideas. Cody Ceci puts his 2nd goal of the year in the back of the net as the Penguins got a good counter going and slick passing starting with McCann(4th) and Mark Friedman(1st). The Flyers then began trying to make a push once more but the Penguins put away an empty netter by Matheson at 16:06. Travis Konecny went into the zone and lost the puck as Hart was trying to exit the ice. Matheson saw this and blasted it down. The Flyers outshot the Penguins 16-8 in that 3rd period.
