Fans believe Flyers aren’t the furthest from a championship

Now that the Flyers abysmal season has come to an end, some fans start looking towards free agency and other moves Chuck Fletcher might make. Others may adopt a second team and cheer them on during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But a majority of Philly sports fans start watching other sports. That led me to ask the question, who’s the next Philly sports team to win a championship?

Flyers

I am a little shocked that this got 20.4% of the vote. I get that the tweet was engaged mostly by Flyers fans, but still… let’s be a little realistic guys. The Flyers are far, far away from a title. It would be a miracle if they were able to win the Stanley Cup before Claude Giroux retires. I don’t think they currently have the coaching staff to get it done, that all started when Alain Vigneault said he had no idea what his players were thinking. That’s a big part of the job AV. We’ll see how he does next season, but if it’s anything like this past one, the Flyers will once again be looking for a Fred Shero.

The future looks a little better with promising players such as Joel Farabee, Carter Hart, and Cam York, but time is ticking for the stars like Jakub Voracek, James van Riemsdyk, and of course Giroux. This team is depressing, let’s move on to an ownership group that has no idea what to do with the Devils!

76ers

The obvious choice racking up 70.4% of the vote is the 76ers. The Sixers are heading into the 2021 NBA Playoffs with the number one seed in the Eastern Conference. They’ve brought in the three point shooting that was lacking during their previous runs and Joel Embiid looks better than ever. Doc Rivers has experience in the playoffs and is going to push this team to their full capabilities. I can’t wait to see Embiid and Russel Westbrook of the Wizards go head to head in round one.

There’s always an uneasiness with any playoff team that you expect to do well (go ask a Toronto Maple Leafs fan how they feel right now). Championship teams erase that feeling quickly.

Union

I didn’t list the Philadelphia Union in the poll because the maximum amount of choices you can have is four.

But shoutout to this guy for knowing what’s up!

The Union have looked fantastic in the Concacaf Champions League and are currently in the semi-finals of the tournament. They are the last remaining MLS team in that tournament too! Led by a sweatshirt wearing, trend setter, head coach Jim Curtin, the home grown players have looked great and Andre Blake has been something the Flyers have lacked for years. A consistently good goalie!

The Union have scared me with their play in the actual MLS regular season so far, but it’s early and they have plenty of time to turn that around. As long as they don’t have to play the New England Revolution six times in one season, the Sons of Ben could start booking their tickets for the MLS Cup Final real soon.

Phillies

The Phillies are in a weird position right now. For starters, everyone is injured and there is no depth at any position besides middle infield where Nick Maton, also known as Chase Utley 2.0, has dominated. Bryce Harper is playing MVP caliber baseball, JT Realmuto is great when he’s not injured, the starting pitching has been ok too, so what’s wrong with them?

Alec Bohm is getting super unlucky at the dish right now, they didn’t have a center fielder for a month, Rhys Hoskins has been stuck at eight home runs for over a week now. Aaron Nola can’t pitch anywhere else but Citizens Bank Park, Hector Neris gives fans heart attacks every time he steps on the field. There are zero minor league players that other teams would actually have interest in trading for (except Mick Abel and Bryson Stott), the offense makes every semi-decent pitcher look like Jacob deGrom, Chase Anderson isn’t a quality starter, and Joe Girardi has been terrible so far!

Hey Dave Dombrowski and Sam Fuld, get on the phone and work your magic, because this team currently has no shot at making the World Series.

Eagles

Drafting Davonta Smith and signing Ryan Kerrigan is a good start, but there’s still a lot that has to be proven. Is Jalen Hurts going to be who we thought he would be and is Nick Sirianni capable of being an NFL head coach? Those are two massive questions in a long list of question marks. With the NFL switching to a 17 game season, do the Eagles have the depth to still contend when players get injured? No they do not, which is why Eagles fans should consider a playoff birth a huge win.

Hitmen

Who the hell are the Philadelphia Hitmen? Let me introduce you to the PBA (Professional Bowling Association). The Hitmen are owned by Kevin Hart and they consistently find ways to screw things up in their once a year tournament. In 2019, one of their best bowlers injured his arm playing flag football and was replaced by a lefty who bowled four open frames in four chances. This is the kind of bad luck that has plagued the Hitmen, I think Kevin Hart himself could’ve done better. You can’t afford that against the Dallas Strikers. Embarrassing!
