On Tuesday afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers did not extend entry-level contracts to two 2019 draftees, goaltender Roddy Ross and forward Egor Serdyuk. Both players, who were each sixth-round selections in the 2019 NHL Draft under former general manager Ron Hextall, are now free agents and the Flyers no longer maintain their exclusive signing rights.

RODDY ROSS

Ross spent the last three seasons in the Western Hockey League, playing for both the Seattle Thunderbirds and Regina Pats. He appeared in 16 games for the Pats this past season, recording a 6-8-2 record along with a .874 save percentage and 3.75 goals against average. It was a huge regression from his prior two seasons when he played with Seattle and it likely factored into the Flyers’ decision to not extend him an offer.

The Flyers also have a logjam of goaltending prospects in their system as it is already, featuring a pipeline that includes Felix Sandström, Kirill Ustimenko, Samuel Ersson, Ivan Fedotov, and Matej Tomek.

There was simply no room for Ross in the organization. That is even with the major possibility of Tomek remaining unsigned as Ustimenko and Sandström will be knocking on the NHL door soon. The Flyers will also likely try to get their overseas goalies in Ersson and Fedotov to North America sooner rather than later.

Serdyuk has spent his junior career in the QMJHL, all with the Victoriaville Tigres for the last three seasons. Serdyuk posted 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points in 63 games in his draft-eligible season in 2018-19, all career-highs that were good enough to warrant an NHL Draft selection from Philadelphia.

Serdyuk mustered eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 26 games this past regular season for the Tigres, only finishing sixth on his team in goals and total points. He has also recorded three goals and two assists for five points in Victoriaville’s 14 playoff games thus far as they’re currently taking on the Val-d’Or Foreurs for the President’s Cup, the QMJHL’s championship trophy.

The Flyers currently stand at 49 contracts in the organization as they head into an offseason that’s anticipated to be one of the busiest we’ve seen in years after their disappointing 2020-21 season.
