3. The Goldbergs- Big Orange (Season 3, Episode 23)

Flyers cofounder Ed Snider became synonymous with the franchise from its inaugural season in 1967-68 into the 21st century. His passing in 2016 was emotional for all Flyers fans.

The Goldbergs, an ABC sitcom created in 2013 by Jenkintown (Montco) native Adam F. Goldberg, was full of Philadelphia sports references throughout its first three seasons. They even tied in a clever narrative about Ron Hextall’s empty net goal in 1987.

However, their best Flyers shoutout paid tribute to the late owner when the main character’s older brother finds out his beloved Flyers t-shirt, nicknamed “Big Orange,” is ruined.

Pretty much every sports fan has one piece of old clothing that they can never bring themselves to throw away. This episode hits the nail on the head with the relatable plotline.

The episode ends with a heartfelt dedication to Snider and his contributions to the franchise.

2. The Mighty Ducks (1992)- Transplanted Flyers Fan

If you’re from the Philadelphia area but live in another city, you’ve probably annoyed somebody by talking too much about Philadelphia. If you live in any other city, you’ve probably been annoyed by someone talking about Philadelphia.

It should come as no surprise that one of the most prominent hockey movie series ever made, the Minnesota based Mighty Ducks trilogy, features a core character who personifies this reality.

Goldberg, the Ducks’ goalie, introduces his Philly roots in his first appearance in the trilogy. In the second movie, he proudly pronounces “Greg Goldberg, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania” after coach Gordan Bombay’s famous “Ducks Fly Together” speech. He regularly sports Flyers gear in all three movies and even mixes in kelly green Eagles gear and a Pat’s Steaks shirt.

A lesser known nugget occurs when Goldberg finally finds his edge between the pipes after some early-season struggles. He can clearly be heard shouting “Hextall!” imitating the long-time Flyers netminder.
