1. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia- Mac’s Big Break (Season 6, Episode 4)

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia authentically depicts the City of Brotherly Love throughout its 14 seasons.

The show’s creator, Rob McElhenney, is a South Philly native. The opening credits feature prominent Philadelphia landmarks. Memorable scenes are filmed at the Italian Market, the Logan Square Fountain, Temple University, and City Hall (just to name a few).

It’s no surprise that McElhenney incorporated the Flyers too. In “Mac’s Big Break,” McElhenney’s character correctly answers a radio promotional trivia question as a caller on the air. He guesses Reggie Leach as the record holder for goals in a single season (61 goals in 1975-76).

Mac’s prize is to shoot a puck from center ice into the net at a Flyers game the following night. After a hilariously vain attempt to learn how to play hockey in two days, he fails miserably in front of a packed crowd at the Wells Fargo Center.

“Mac’s Big Break” is one of many Philadelphia sports based episodes. Others include tributes to the Phillies winning the 2008 World Series and the Super Bowl LII champion Eagles.

Sam Carchidi, the team’s beat writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Wayne Fish, another long-time media member, detailed this iconic reference and many others in their book The Big 50: Philadelphia Flyers: The Men and Moments that Made the Philadelphia Flyers.
