Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Sam Morin has reportedly suffered another unfortunate knee injury, according to Anthony SanFilippo of Crossing Broad.
Morin’s latest injury setback is a crushing blow for a player that’s worked so hard to get back into playing shape and fight for a full-time spot with the Flyers this season.
This isn’t Morin’s first battle with knee injuries either. He originally tore the ACL in his right knee during the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Game 4 of their Atlantic Division Finals series against the Charlotte Checkers. Morin rehabilitated his injury all offseason and worked his way back to playing in seven games between the Phantoms and Flyers in 2018-19.
Morin would suffer another torn ACL in November 2019 during a regular season AHL contest with the Phantoms against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The tear occurred in his right knee again, and he would miss the rest of the year and had to go through another rigorous rehabilitation process. Morin had only appeared in four games that season between Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley before his injury.
Morin was able to play in 20 games for the Flyers this past season along with seven more contests with the Phantoms. He split time at left wing and his traditional defenseman position, but was much better on the back end and ended up sticking around there later in the season. He was fortunate enough to score his first NHL goal on March 27th against the New York Rangers, a tally that would stand as the game-winner in Morin’s 15th career NHL contest.
If the reports are true, this is obviously a huge blow for Morin given how hard he has worked over and over again to try and rehabilitate his knee and stay in playing shape. Morin is a hard worker who plays a strong, physical game and is an even more genuine person who loves the game so much, and you can just see the passion burning within him in the way he carries himself on and off the ice.
The 26 year-old Lac-Beauport, Quebec native has only appeared in 29 NHL games since being drafted 11th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft by Philadelphia. He has also played in 177 AHL contests as well for the Phantoms, though he has not played a full season of professional hockey in any capacity since 2016-17 when he played in 74 games for Lehigh Valley.
The struggles that Morin has been through, both physically and mentally, are something that we can’t even begin to process right now. It’s just a huge blow to a player that’s worked so hard and has unfortunately fallen victim to the injury bug. We wish Sam best of luck in his recovery and hopefully we will see him on the ice again at full strength and seeing that huge grin in front of the fans at Wells Fargo Center again would be fantastic.
