You’ve probably noticed a little something different after the Philadelphia Flyers have scored goals at home this preseason. The Flyers have been auditioning new goal song ideas after the team’s two-year run of using Jetboy’s “Feel The Shake” is thankfully over with. Fans were invited to share submissions with the team online and then the finalists would be blasted over the Wells Fargo Center’s sound system after the goal horn sounded on each goal.

We heard seven different options spanning over three games, with more probably in the vault had they scored more. The Flyers announced that they’ve cut it down to the final three options, with the winning song being decided by a fan vote and will debut on Opening Night on October 15th against the Vancouver Canucks. We’ll go over each one and if it really fits as the team’s new goal song.

TARZAN BOY – BALTIMORA

There’s definitely a crowd-involving element to it with the Tarzan-esque chant. It has a nice beat and has the rhythm that only a synthesizer-filled ‘80s song could possess. It’s not as upbeat as you’d typically like a goal song to be, but it’s certainly catchy and still a unique song. Also a song called “Tarzan Boy” is sort of fitting for Philadelphians. This city is a jungle filled with plenty of colorful characters, cheesesteaks, fireworks, water ice, four-wheelers, history at every corner, Wawas also at every corner, statues dedicated to movie characters, everything! And we’re animals, but passionate animals who just love the Flyers, so it fits in its own special way.

BEER – REEL BIG FISH

This one has another chant the crowd can get involved with, which is nice. It’s a little faster than the first option, and serves as a punk rock option that’s an alternative to the ’80s pop that was played before it. Also a song called “Beer” is kind of fun, right? The Flyers score a few goals, the song plays, you have some beer to celebrate! It adds up, even though the actual theme of the song is the singer not exactly drinking because he’s happy. But hey, the Flyers are going to be better and more fun to watch this season, they just might associate something more fun with it.

THIS GIRL – KUNGS VS. COOKIN’ ON 3 BURNERS

Ah yes, the iPhone commercial song. It certainly wouldn’t be my first choice, but it’s also not the worst thing they could’ve picked as a finalist. It’s upbeat, it gets people moving, it has some energy to it. There’s not really a chant or anything crowd-involving about it, but it’s something that fans can jam out to I suppose.

The song also has a small background in hockey. The French national team, which included then-Flyer Pierre-Édouard Bellemare, used it as their goal song at the 2017 IIHF Men’s World Championships, so it at least has some familiarity with the sport to a certain degree. That being said, if this song ends up the winner and we don’t see “Shot on iPhone” lit up on the Wells Fargo Center scoreboard, this will be a massive disappointment.
