In their first revenge game of the 21-22 season, the Philadelphia Flyers marched into Rogers Arena looking to even up the season series with the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night. The Flyers were looking to piggyback off of their upset win of Edmonton the night prior, where Vancouver was looking to get right again after a loss to Minnesota a few nights prior.

Opening the initial frame, the Flyers marched out early, with Couturier scoring from Giroux and Konecny within the first minute, expanding a fantastic early season from all three. Couturier moved into first for overall team points and Giroux reached a six game point streak to start a season for the first time in his career.

However the lead was not long for this world as a defense to defense play between Luke Schenn and Quinn Hughes found twine to sewer the early Flyers lead in pedestrian fashion. Of course, contract year Giroux didn’t care as his board play lead to a tic-tac-toe powerplay goal that featured a now famous bank pass chemistry between him and Couturier that saw James van Riemsdyk pot his first of the season.

The second period saw a flat Flyers team immediately come out, giving Vancouver every opportunity available. An early scrap between former Canuck Zack MacEwan and former Flyer Luke Schenn saw the Philadelphia take their first penalty of the game due to a grab of Schenn’s visor.

The ensuing powerplay would lead to a litany of opportunities for Vancouver, but much maligned Flyers back-up Martin Jones was able to weather the storm. Beyond that, more penalties in the second period gave Vancouver the man advantage, but Jones and the defense were able to stymie the Canucks offense in a period where Philadelphia was totally outplayed.

The third period saw a bit of a continuation of the second period. The Flyers didn’t come out burning the house down, but Martin Jones and the defense were able to stand tall. Though the team did even the shots on goal numbers in the final frame, neither team was able to find paydirt as the Flyers confirmed a 2-1 win.

Martin Jones was a Chuck Fletcher signing that drew much ire in the preseason, however his two games against quality opponents thus far have quieted some of the talk against him. Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier have continued their hot starts as the Flyers look to win out their road trip this Saturday in Calgary.
