After a shootout loss against Tampa Bay last week, the Philadelphia Flyers saw themselves making their Florida road-trip looking to gain some ground in the hotly-contested Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference as a whole.

THE GOOD:

HART AND SOUL: Despite giving up a handful of goals Carter Hart stood tall tonight keeping the Flyers in this game even after the Lighting widened the gap in the second period. There are a number of issues with the current Flyers team, and letting a player score their first of the year is tough pill to swallow, but Hart managed to look elite between the pipes, despite some suspect defensive play. If Hart wasn’t in net, this game would certainly have looked uglier than it did.

THE OLD GUARD: The Flyers skaters that had their best evening were almost unanimously Claude Giroux and Cam Atkinson. Giroux continued his early season dominance with a number of high quality scoring opportunities as well as a number of potential assists. Atkinson saw the most benefit from G’s elite play, being gifted a number of opportunities that he failed to put past the best goaltender in the league.

THE BAD:

THE KIDS AREN’T ALRIGHT: The youth movement the Flyers have attempted to embrace has not been going well in the early stretches of the season. Joel Farabee continued his scoreless streak in a game that saw most of the Flyers young forwards totally silenced. Konecny and Sanheim both had good moments in the early periods, but neither managed to find paydirt in a stretch that has seen them both struggle to put points on the scoreboard.

THE WORST OF THE BEST: After Boston’s Craig Smith forced the Flyers defense to become completely unglued, it became clear that the Flyers have been struggling to defend against teams bottom lines. Against Tampa Bay tonight this concept was solidified with former Flyer Pierre Eduoard-Bellemare emerging as a genuine offensive presence, who would only be highlighted by goals from Corey Perry and Zach Bogosian, two players well removed from their prime as goal-scorers. Even mid-season waiver claim Alexander Barre-Boulet found his way past Hart in a game where the Lightning had their way with the Flyers defense.

THE UGLY:

THE LIGHTNING ON ICE: The Flyers, and most notably Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier, are one of the best faceoff teams in the league. Despite their talent in the dot, they were totally unable to take advantage of the Lightning’s constant icing of the puck. In fact, most of these offensive zone draws for the Flyers saw the Orange and Black defaulting to defending instead of offense.

BROADSTREET BULLIED: When it comes to special teams the Flyers seemed totally outmatched against the Lightning tonight. Special teams most notably looked like they were structured around a different sport, where the powerplay remained limp, and the penalty kill was finally destroyed by a superior team. The Flyers have been far from a “soft” team thus far, but they have shown to be easy to play against, and fans should be hoping they solve themselves quickly before this season gets ugly.
