Winning has become a rarity for the Philadelphia Flyers this season, it seems. Though interim head coach Mike Yeo has improved the team’s performances since taking over the position from Alain Vigneault back in December 2021, Philadelphia’s injury-plagued season of misery is showing almost no sign in slowing down.
Philadelphia has lost 18 of their last 20 games, only earning two wins total in 2022 so far. After Monday’s 4-3 OT loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, in which Rasmus Ristolainen and Patrick Brown both returned to the lineup, the Flyers hope to finally stop the bleeding on Tuesday when they face-off against the St. Louis Blues.
Philadelphia Flyers
Record 15-25-10 (40 points; 7th in Metro)
The Flyers, who are currently sitting in the bottom-five of the NHL’s standings, have had their hands full with injuries all season. They’ve played near the entire season without most of their top players and will continue the remainder of their season, likely, without Sean Couturier, Kevin Hayes, and possibly Ryan Ellis.
With tons of call-ups coming from the AHL in attempts to replace some big holes in the lineup, Philadelphia have found themselves becoming reliant on the likes of Isaac Ratcliffe, Morgan Frost, and Gerald Mayhew. Ratcliffe and Mayhew have both heated up recently for the orange and black hockey club. Ratcliffe has recorded four points so far ( 1 G 3 A) in just his first six NHL games, while Mayhew has scored four goals in his last six games.
Projected Lineup
Lindblom – Giroux – Atkinson
van Riemsdyk – Laughton – Konecny
Willman – Frost – Mayhew
Ratcliffe – Brown – MacEwen
Provorov – Braun
Sanheim – Ristolainen
Yandle – Seeler
Hart *
* Carter Hart was ruled out of Monday’s matchup vs Carolina due to an eye infection, but remains probable to start Tuesday vs St. Louis.
St. Louis Blues
Record: 29-14-6 (64 pts, 3rd in Central)
The Blues, having won six of their last 10 games, are showing Mike Yeo that injuries are not enough of an obstacle to hold a quality hockey team back from experiencing success. St. Louis currently sits in third place in the Central Division, one point behind the Minnesota Wild and trailing the top of the league’s Colorado Avalanche by just 12 points–not bad for a team that struggled with injuries all season, too.
Despite not having even a single player to play every game so far this year, the Blues are continuing to prove that they still possess that “next man up” mentality from their Stanley Cup-winning season back in 2019. Not only are the Blues a determined, physical-playing resilient hockey club, but they are also playing in front of one of the hottest goalies between the pipes this year in Ville Husso.
But it’ll be Jordan Binnington tending the net and he has some history in Philadelphia. Making his first career start at the Wells Fargo Center in 2019, he sparked the team on their way to the Stanley Cup. He’s struggled this season, going 11-10-3 with a 3.35 GAA and a .898 SV%. He’s making his first start since February 10th.
Projected Lineup
Saad – O’Reilly – Perron
Buchnevich – Thomas – Tarasenko
Barbashev – Schenn – Kryou
Kostin – Bozak – Sundqvist
Mikkola – Parayko
Krug – Faulk
Walman – Bortuzzo
