Unless something major is to happen within the next few months, the Flyers won’t have any breaking news when it comes to signings. Instead, they’ll be working to bring back players who can act as depth pieces lower in the lineup. They’ve done that recently with the Isaac Ratcliffe signing.
While he could be more than a depth piece, Morgan Frost was brought back as well. Players like Owen Tippett, Zack MacEwen, who has an arbitration hearing, and Wade Allison were tendered offers and are awaiting new contracts. Another of those players was Tanner Laczynski. He’s the latest to agree to terms on a new deal.
Laczynski and the Flyers agreed to a two year, two way/one way deal worth $762,500. He is yet another forward that has dealt with injuries over the last few years. After appearing in five games towards the end of the 2020-21 season, Laczynski suffered a torn labrum. He missed a large chunk of this past season as he rehabbed from the injury while also suffered another hip injury before the season even began.
He was limited to 28 games with the Phantoms, though he did produce fairly well in those games. He posted seven goals and 17 assists during his time in the NHL. Laczynski would end up appearing in one NHL games this past season.
Laczynski should battle for a bottom-six spot in the Flyers roster this season. As mentioned above, it’s likely that the team won’t be making any ground breaking moves unless they move out major pieces and clear loads of salary off their cap. So this will be giving plenty of young players a chance to show what they can do.
Assuming players like Tippett and Allison are signed in the near future, there will be a healthy competition for roles in the Flyers lineup. With the addition of Nicolas Deslauriers, who will almost certainly be slotted on the fourth line, there aren’t a lot of spots available at the moment. Patrick Brown also figures to be in the mix as well.
Laczynski showed off his scoring touch in college where he lead Ohio State in scoring during two of his final three seasons. He tied for third in the Big Ten Conference in points during his senior season and was second in the conference in assists.
If Laczynski can remain healthy, he should have a strong opportunity to nab a full time NHL spot.
