The NHL is unveiling a new set of the Reverse Retro jerseys during the 2022-23 season. Each of the 32 teams is getting a makeover. Some of these jerseys are alternative designs from the 1990s. Others, like the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken, who are a few seasons old, are being given designs that look retro.

The Flyers, part of the first set of expansion teams or the “Second Six” in the NHL are also getting a retro looking jersey. Since the Flyers jersey has remained rather iconic throughout their 54 year history, there isn’t a whole lot to do with logos or anything dramatic. Instead, the new look hearkens back to the Flyers 80s era while switching it up a bit.

The new jersey takes the iconic white home jersey, but flips it. Instead of orange running across the shoulders and down the sleeves, it is black. The bright orange the Flyers now wear is replaced by the more reddish burnt-orange worn during the 80s and 90s. Also back are the Cooperall pants with orange striping down the sides with a mini Flyers logo near the ankle for warmup look.

To complete the jersey, they went back to the old school orange and black logo the NHL used to use. The nameplate on the back is also in black.

In the Flyers press release, they stated it this way:

“This season’s Flyers Reverse Retro jersey honors the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup championship teams. The iconic Flyers crest will showcase dimensional embroidery treatment raising the outline around the front crest featuring a thin black outline surrounding the crest to match the original worn only in 1974. The jersey is remixed in an almost all white and black color palette, while slight accents of burnt orange pay homage to teams from the 1990s. The current NHL shield logo is also remixed in vintage orange and black colors.”

In 2020, the Flyers had another retro jersey that looked, well…..bleech. It was orange with black trim and just didn’t look like a good Flyers jersey. It looked like a jersey you’d get at a flea market from someone selling knockoffs.

The jerseys will be worn on the following dates:

Tuesday, Nov. 8, vs. Blues
Wednesday, Nov. 23, at Capitals
Friday, Nov. 25, vs. Penguins
Thursday, Dec. 1, vs. Lightning
Thursday, Dec. 15, at Devils
Thursday, Jan. 5, vs. Coyotes
Saturday, Jan. 14, at Capitals
Thursday, Jan. 19, vs. Blackhawks

If you want to check out the rest of the NHL jersey, check them out here. Some highlights include Washington bringing back the “Flying Eagle”, the Isles bringing back the much derided “Gorton’s Fisherman”, the Ducks go back to their Disney roots, and Buffalo returning to their “Angry Buffalo” look.  I will also add that the Florida Panther’s jersey looks very similar to the ones worn in the Will Farrell classic “Semi Pro” in my opinion.

The new jersey also, again in my opinion, is better than the only poor choice the team ever made with the “Terminator” look. The jerseys are on presale now if you want them, and let’s be honest….you’ll want to add them to your collection.
