Three Players the Flyers Should Buy if They are Buying
The Flyers are in a weird stage right now this season. The team could either cash in its chips and go home; sell off some players and hope for a really good draft pick. Or, the team could buy some assets, hopefully some of them would be willing to sign an extension, and make a run for it. Maybe they could end up being this year’s St. Louis Blues that get hot at the right moment and make a deep run. Maybe they could do a little bit of both.
There are a lot of great names who could be available at this year’s deadline. Bo Horvat is already off the board. It’s a shame, because he would really look good in a Flyers uniform.
Other names wouldn’t make sense for the Flyers because they are kind of/sort of on a youth movement. So, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, aren’t coming; unless you want them as a “grandpa/mentor” sort of role. Although, either one would be a good fit on the third line, it’s just hard to see happening. And besides, they aren’t leaving one bad team for another non-contender.
The following are three players that the Flyers should kick the tires on and could add if the price is right. All three could be signed to extensions; which should be a precursor to the trade. All three would be valuable to this team for several reasons.
Timo Meier
Oh baby….I can see him now, skating down the ice on a three-on-two with Travis Konecny and Noah Cates centering. He has 28 goals and 20 assists this year. He has topped the 20 goal mark in all but two of his seasons: his rookie year when he scored three goals in 34 games and the COVID year when he scored 12.
The problem with that is that he would be a high price to pay. But, he might be worth a first round pick this year, maybe a defender, and a prospect or two. He’s 27 years old and could be a major player in Philly for a while.
However, because he is going to be highly desired, there will be a multitude of suitors. And as any student of economics will tell you, when the demand is high, the price goes up too. He could be too costly for the Flyers. But again, if Chuck Fletcher could swing something, it could pay off immediately.
Brock Boeser
If the Canucks are selling, and selling cheap, then Fletcher should take advantage of that. Boeser has had a pretty good career so far, but hasn’t been impressive this year with just nine goals and 21 assists. Still, he’s been a good player in the past. And because of his struggles this year, he may come a little bit cheaper than he might normally. Hey, maybe Vancouver is just bumming him out.
Maybe he just needs a change of scenery. Maybe that scenery could be Philadelphia. He could easily adjust to be on one of the top lines here. Where Meier can play both left and right winger, Boeser is more of a right wing position player. Still, he would be a good fit. And at 25, he’s still at the right age where he could turn it around quick
Max Domi
He’s the oldest player in this group at 27 years old. He’s been on four teams in as many years (Montreal, Columbus, Carolina, and Chicago). However, he would easily fit on this team. He is a grinder. He is physical, like his father Tie was. However, he has a scoring touch. So far this year, he has 14 goals with 21 assists.
He’s not a major scoring threat, but would bring a punch and physicality to a third or fourth line while still being someone who can score when given a chance. He could be a fun addition to a power play or a third line. He probably wouldn’t cost too much, however it sounds as if he really likes being in Chicago (even if the team is bad) and it appears that the Blackhawks are interested in possibly keeping him too.
