The Philadelphia Flyers were among the worst teams in the NHL in scoring goals. They scored 220 goals. That was good for 29th and just above Columbus (213), Anaheim (206), and Chicago (202). In comparison, Edmonton led the league with 325 goals. Although, you could argue that scoring goals doesn’t do a whole lot if you can’t win games as Buffalo was third in the NHL with 293 goals, but were seventh worst in goals against at 297.

Perhaps one of the reasons that the Flyers weren’t good at scoring was the fact that, out of their 220 goals, 121 were scored at home. Maybe it was because of the goal song.

That’s kind of neat, but it is more subdued and lacks fan participation which is what makes a goal song really, really fun. When the fans are hyped and the crowd is nuts, it is almost like they are part of the action on the ice.

For example, and I will probably infuriate many fans here, but let’s listen to the Chicago Blackhawks’ goal song, “Chelsea Dagger” by the Fratellis.

Ok, that song is giving me nightmare flashbacks to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals. But still, it is fun, it is lively, it gets the fans heavily involved, and it is a little bit on the cocky side. A tad bit arrogant. I like that.

The Flyers have had a lot of goal songs over the years. One of the best was brought over by current Flyers general manager Daniel Briere from the Philadelphia Union. It’s called “Maria” by Scooter, but to Philly sports fans, it’s known as the “Doop Doop Song”.

It was unique, it was ours, and it was awesome hearing 19,000 fans screaming it. It’s an odd one, but there was, much like “Chelsea Dagger”, a touch of arrogance with it. It was perfect.

Now, the Flyers could do the conventional route and do things like “Song #2” by Blur or “Rock and Roll Part 2” by Gary Glitter. Those are good songs, but just about every team has done them at some point. The Blur song has been used a lot by the Penguins in recent years.

If I may, I would like to suggest five options.

“Neocon” by The Offspring

It’s a short song. The fans could easily chant the “Oohhhhhhhhhhhhhh” part, but I love hearing Dexter Holland defiantly chanting, “We will never lose to you!” to close the song out. That’s the sort of attitude the Flyers need to have. We will NEVER lose to you.

“A Warriors Call” by Volbeat

I remember when the Flyers used to come out to this song.  It’s fast. It’s powerful. You could just fast forward to the minute mark and just play the “Fight! Fight! Fight!” part. It’s a great callback to the Flyers’ past. It would definitely get the fans psyched up to go.

“Bullet with Butterfly Wings” by Smashing Pumpkins

Ok, this is a little different, and much older than the previous two songs. However, the chorus about being a “rat in a cage” I think could go over really well in Philly; channeling the “underdog” attitude.

“Gettin Jiggy With It” by Will Smith

Ok, we’re sticking with the 90s here. I know it is a cheesy song, but Will Smith is a Philly boy. You know a lot of people at the Wells Fargo Center know this song and could easily sing along. It’s a fun way to represent one of Philly’s favorite sons and a fun way to celebrate a goal.

“Whoomp! There It Is” by Tag Team

If you were alive to see the 1993 Phillies, this was the song of the summer. This song helped fuel every rally at the Vet (along with “Hip Hop Hooray” by Naughty by Nature). So, it has the nostalgic factor that is always a lot of fun. Also, it’s just a lot of fun to sing along to, even if it does make you think of the Progressive Commercials.

My vote would be to bring back “Maria” as the goal song and I hope Briere has some influence where he can do that. If not, we need to do something. It needs to be something that energizes the crowd as well as inspires the team to score a lot. I’m also tired of the Flyers changing it every season. I’d rather them pick something that is ours for years. Afterall, the Blackhawks have been using that dang song for years.

What do you think? What do you think should be the Flyers’ goal song?
