Philadelphia Flyers Extend Olle Lycksell For Two Years
The Philadelphia Flyers announced Thursday afternoon that they have re-signed RFA Olle Lycksell to a two-year, two-way, $1.575 million contract.
Olle Lycksell, a 23 year old forward, was a 2017 sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers, and made his NHL debut for the team this past season. Lycksell will turn 24 in August, and is coming off of his first full season in North America.
In eight games with the Flyers, Olle Lycksell posted one assist, but had eight penalty minutes and was a minus three in his limited time with the big club. With the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Lycksell scored 45 points in 53 games, including 14 goals. In the Calder Cup playoffs, Lycksell had two goals and two assists in three games.
Heading into the 2023-24 season, Olle Lycksell has a slight advantage over other Flyers prospects aspiring to make the NHL roster. Lycksell will be 24 on opening night, and is a left-shooting forward who can play both center and wing. Players like Bobby Brink and Tyson Foerster have less clear paths to playing time as righties, because they’re currently stuck behind the likes of Travis Konecny, Owen Tippett, Cam Atkinson, and newcomer Garnet Hathaway.
Olle Lycksell brings a maturity that few other Flyers prospects have, at the moment. Before coming over to North America last year, Lycksell played parts of five seasons in the SHL, Sweden’s highest level of competitive hockey.
In the SHL, Olle Lycksell racked up 95 points in 221 games, but took his game to another level in the playoffs. In 10 total playoff games, Lycksell added 11 points, and was a plus seven for his teams.
With training camp on the horizon, Olle Lycksell figures to make a big push for regular NHL playing time after getting his feet wet in North America in the 2022-23 season. His path to a place in the lineup will become more clear once the Flyers identify a plan for some of their other prospects and current roster players.
