Stop me if you've heard this before, but the Philadelphia Flyers are entering a new era. It's full of promise with a large focus on player development as the team looks to gain respect in the Eastern Conference.
One team that has that respect is the Florida Panthers, winners of the last two Stanley Cups. The Flyers open their 2025-26 regular season tonight at 7 PM ET at the Panthers in an opener that's full of intriguing storylines.
3 storylines to keep an eye on in the Flyers' season opener
1. Rick Tocchet's first game as head coach
It was known for a little while last season that John Tortorella's days as the Flyers' head coach were numbered as the team played below even their rebuilding expectations in a lousy winter. Tortorella was canned after a heated altercation with Cam York reportedly took place, leaving Flyers brass to search for a new head man behind the bench.
Of course, they made a splash by reaching a five-year agreement with the former Flyer Rick Tocchet after most recently coaching the Vancouver Canucks for 2 1/2 seasons from 2023-25. He earned the Jack Adams Award in his first full season in Vancouver in 2023-24 after leading them to a Pacific Division-winning 109 points.
The Canucks were bounced out of the second round that season before missing the playoffs entirely last season, leading to Tocchet's abrupt exit. The 25th coach in team history is entering a far different situation with the rebuilding Flyers, who look to avoid setting a franchise record for most consecutive seasons missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, at six.
2. New offseason additions make their debut
Tocchet wasn't the only new splashy acquisition made by general manager Daniel Briere this offseason. The most exciting move by far was the trade acquisition of forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks this past June. A restricted free agent after this season, the talented 24-year-old Zegras will look to prove his worth by returning to his scoring threat form that saw him post two straight 23-goal, 60-plus point seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Zegras' production in the previous two seasons was limited as he battled a series of injuries. Now fully healthy and moving to the center permanently, he has a chance to produce some exciting plays beside potential linemate Matvei Michkov.

Other notable additions making their Flyers debuts tonight are veteran winger Christian Dvorak and goaltender Dan Vladar, who is somewhat surprisingly getting the start tonight over Samuel Ersson, in a make-or-break season for the pending restricted free agent.
3. The return of Jett Luchanko
The Flyers spent their 2024 first-round pick on Canadian center Jett Luchanko with the 13th overall pick. One of the organization's top prospects, Luchanko was barely 18 years old when he made the opening roster last year before being loaned back to his junior team, the Guelph Storm, after just four NHL games. Luchanko found the penalty box once and failed to record a point in those four games, but he flashed his offensive potential once back in the OHL.
In 46 games with the Storm, Luchanko tallied 56 points on 21 goals and 35 assists. Later in the season, Luchanko had a cup of coffee with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms leading into their Calder Cup playoff run. He was responsible for three assists in nine regular season games and six assists in seven playoff games, so he'll be searching for his first career goal in the states this season. He's fully healthy after battling a minor groin injury this offseason and is searching to carve his role on the NHL club this season.
