On Thursday, Oct. 8, the Philadelphia Flyers traveled up to Ottawa to take on the Senators. The Flyers were hoping for their first win of the season. The Senators took the lead halfway into the first period, but the Flyers tied it up in the second. Unfortunately, a late power play goal in the third period put the Senators back in the lead. With no more goals scored, the Senators handed the Flyers a 2-1 loss.

Michkov with the only goal

Matvei Michkov scored the Flyers' only goal in this game in the second period. The Flyers managed to get a power play chance, which Michkov capitalized on. Trevor Zegras took a shot, but it bounced out of the crease and in front of Michkov, who sent the puck into the net to tie the game.

This goal marked Michkov's second of the season. He is currently the only player on the Flyers who has multiple goals. It is clear that the Flyers' offense is struggling this season, but Michkov has done a fair job of giving the Flyers a fighting chance when he's on the ice.

Flyers couldn't keep their penalties in check

The Flyers' major downfall in this game was their penalties. Philadelphia gave up four penalties right after another in the first period. A tripping penalty called on Travis Sanheim ended, but it was the direct result of the Senators getting on the board first; Ottawa scored just four seconds after the penalty expired.

Philadelphia allowed the Senators three more penalties in quick succession in the first period, a tripping penalty at 10:19, a holding penalty at 12:29, and a cross-checking penalty at 12:40. Luckily for the Flyers, the Senators weren't able to capitalize on the plethora of chances Philadelphia gave up in the remainder of the first.

In his debut with the Flyers, Michael Bunting was called on a hooking penalty in the third period. This was the last penalty the Flyers received in the game after the quick succession of penalties in the first 20 minutes of game play. Unfortunately, this hooking penalty also gave the Senators the win after they notched a power-play goal to put Ottawa back in the lead.

Unnecessary penalties cost the Flyers the game. These were silly mistakes that could have been avoided, but tensions ran high.

Flyers continue to seek out first win

Despite a close game, the Flyers once again fall to their opponent for their fifth straight game of the season. Philadelphia is not starting off in the greatest way, but hopefully, they can right the ship soon. The Flyers remain the only team in the Eastern Conference without a win, while the Calgary Flames and the Los Angeles Kings over in the Western Conference are the two other winless teams.

The Flyers have one more game on their current road trip, against the Boston Bruins on Saturday, Oct. 10. It's a matinee game, so the Flyers don't have much time to recover before getting right back into it.

Philadelphia has ten more games scheduled for October, six of which are at home. Despite a poor performance to open the season, Flyers fans can still hold out hope that Philadelphia records at least one win in the month of October.
