On Wednesday, Oct. 21, the Philadelphia Flyers traveled upstate New York to take on the Buffalo Sabres. This game marked the first in a three-game season series between the two teams.
The Flyers recorded the first goal 14 minutes into the first period and extended their lead five minutes later. Buffalo got on the board late in the second period, but another goal for Philadelphia in the third secured the 3-1 win for Philadelphia. For a team that went nine games straight without recording their first win, they now have three straight wins.
Knuble stuns in second NHL game
This game marked Cole Knuble's second in his NHL career. However, he is already playing like a seasoned pro. 14 minutes into the first period, Denver Barkey sent a pass to Oliver Bonk at the blue line. He took a slapshot, but Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made the initial save. Knuble was near the net and picked up the loose puck. With a backhanded shot, he sent the puck into the net for the Flyers' first of the game and his first NHL goal.
Knuble wasn't done for the night, though. Just three minutes into the third period, Bonk dished another pass to Knuble in front of the net to score his second of the game and his career.
Hockey is in Knuble's blood, as his father, Mike, was a Flyer for four years. He joined Cole for a postgame interview. Not only did Mike get to witness his son score his first two NHL goals, he got to be there to celebrate this media moment with him. This is a night the two Knubles won't soon forget.
Zegras stays scoring
Trevor Zegras has finally found his groove and scored on the Flyers' first power-play chance of the game. This extends his points streak to five points in three games.
The first few games for the Flyers were rough, partially because it looked like Zegras wasn't playing with his head in the game. Now that he has found his stride, the rest of the team is trending in the right direction. This is not to say all the pressure was on Zegras for the Flyers' losing streak, but the fact that he is now playing well is a large part of the Flyers' success.
Vladar records second-straight win
The Flyers were off to a rough start to the 2026-27 season, but so was goaltender Dan Vladar. Again, not everything was Vladar's fault, especially when the team you're in net for isn't scoring themselves.
During the preseason, Vladar was injured, so he didn't get a lot of ice time as he recovered. It wasn't until the Flyers' home opener that he truly began facing shots, in which he allowed seven goals. It takes time to recover from a performance like that, and luckily, Vladar has bounced back.
In this game against the Sabres, Vladar recorded a save percentage of .964. This was his best to date and now puts him at a .900 SV% for the season. After such a rough start, Vladar has been considerably better for Philadelphia. Now, he just needs to keep the momentum going, like the rest of his team.
