A natural left-winger (left-hand shot), Alex Bump has shown he could be worth more than his fifth-round (122nd Overall) selection in the 2022 NHL Draft for the Philadelphia Flyers. The large but not overly hulking 21-year-old from Burnsville, Minnesota is fifth-round selection and comes in at 6’0” and 198 lbs.

Bump is only a sophomore for the Western Michigan University Broncos but earned himself a role as assistant captain for the 2024-2025 season. Thus far, this season has been memorable for WMU, as they are 30-7-1. Their 30 wins are tied for the most in the country, and their 19 conference wins are tied for the most in NCHC history.

Thanks to Bump's skillful, double overtime winning goal, the Mustangs earned their first NCHC title in program history. Next up, Bump and his Broncos will face Minnesota State on March 27th in the regional game of the coveted NCAA tournament. Needless to say, #20 will be sure to draw attention from the Minnesota State defenseman as both teams look to continue their journeys toward the NCAA Frozen Four.

As a freshman, Bump notched an impressive 36 points (14 G, 23 A) in 38 games, which included three PPG and two GWG. Already averaging nearly a point per game as a 20-year-old, Bump increased his point total by 10 points in the 2024-25 season. This season, he has racked up 46 points (23 G, 23 A), which included seven PPG and six GWG. Yes, those weren't typos. Alex Bump scored SEVEN power play goals and SIX game-winning goals in a fairly moderate 38 games played.

Will Bump turn pro after this season with WMU? That answer is still unknown, but Flyers fans appear to have yet another prospect to be excited about in the coming years. Given the abysmal play of the orange and black following the trade deadline, fans are desperate for some light in the darkness that is Flyers hockey at the moment. Between the humiliating powerplay that has gone 0/31 throughout March and a record of 1-9-1 in their last 10 games, most Flyers fans are counting down the days until the offseason.

The prospect pipeline is becoming more promising as the 2024-2025 season is concluding. Whether it be Flyers prospects in the OHL (Jett Luchanko, Denver Barkey, Oliver Bonk) or the NCAA (Cole Knuble, Owen McLaughlin), the future appears to bright. However, fans mustn't salivate too quickly over these prospects, as their development years will be instrumental in shaping them into elite NHL players when this franchise is ready to become a consistent playoff contender.
