Porter Martone has exceeded early expectations and become one of the most important players on the Flyers since he joined the team for their playoff push. But now he's becoming an NHL history maker as a teenager.
It started with the Flyers' Game 1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Going on the road in their first playoff game since the 2020 bubble, frankly, it would've just been nice to steal a game. However, the Flyers battled hard, and Martone broke a tie with a late third-period rifle to the top of the net. It stood as the game-winning goal, making Martone the only teenager to ever score a game-winning goal in his playoff debut.
That's impressive, and even more impressive when you consider that only two other rookies have scored in their playoff debuts since 2020. Then add in that it was only his 10th pro game ever. He's been on a heater since entering the league with 10 points in 9 regular-season games to close out the year, and he was riding a 6-game point streak going into the playoffs. Game 1 made it 7 games, and the history we just talked about.
Surely Game 2 would be different. The rookie luck won't hold out will it?
Wrong.
Martone did it again.
Porter Martone makes NHL playoff history with second career game-winning goal
Goal scorers are in the right place at the right time, seemingly all the time, and Martone has that innate gift. He shows it here, grabbing a rebound and ramming a backhand home for the Flyers' first goal of the evening.

With the goal, his point streak was extended to 8 games, and he helped spot the Flyers a lead. That was enough for the night. The Flyers did add two more goals, one shorthanded beauty that saw Owen Tippett leave Garnet Hathaway with a high danger chance he couldn't miss, and then Hathaway and Couturier combined to spring Luke Glendening for an empty net goal that left no doubt at all.
Dan Vladar held strong in the net, and nothing got by him, and he found twine. With their cage intact, the Flyers won with a 3-0 shutout and now carry a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series, which shifts back to Philadelphia. Everything is rolling the Flyers' way currently, and they'll be deadset on maintaining that momentum.
As for Martone, his history-making turn gets another addition.
Porter Martone is the first teenager in NHL history to score the game-winning goal in each of his first two career playoff games. Only one other teenager in NHL history has scored the GWG in consecutive games: Joe Thornton (Game 6 of 1999 CQF & Game 1 of 1999 CSF).#NHLStats

Not only is Martone the only teenager in NHL history to score a game-winning goal in each of his first two career playoff games, but he's also only the 2nd ever to score back-to-back game-winning goals. Martone wasn't alive when Joe Thornton achieved his feat 27 years ago, and it is hard to imagine this record being matched any time soon.
Porter Martone's entrance into the lineup has been a spark for the Flyers, and that spark has turned into playoff magic here in the early stages. If you're going to the game on Wednesday, be prepared for a crowd that will blow the roof off the place, especially if Martone has some wizardry still to come.
