For the first time this season, the Flyers have won back-to-back games. They have also won three of their last four after another grind-it-out victory. This one was against the Blues.

Ryan Poehling shows off speed and skill

Poehling took a chance on himself last season when he signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia. The bet paid off as he earned himself a multi-year extension. This year didn’t start off well for him, though. But against the Blues, he showed off the part of his game that has been a highlight of his.

Starting in the defensive zone, Poehling carried the puck up the entire ice, weaving in and out of the Blues players in his way. He also showed off some nice dekes and found Garnet Hathaway alone at the back door. Hathaway took care of the rest as Jordan Binnington couldn’t quite get over in time.

You can tell that Poehling’s teammates may have been more excited about his assist than the goal itself.

Sam Ersson nearly posts another shutout

It was a shutout streak that lasted nearly 130 minutes for Sam Ersson. That dates back to the third period of the game against the Minnesota Wild. It looked like he would get another one against the Blues after shutting out the Bruins two nights ago.

It took a rebound that went to a wide-open Nathan Walker to break the streak. But Ersson continues to keep the Flyers in games where they aren’t at their best offensively. It helps when the players in front of him commit to blocking shots as well. His teammates got in front of 24 shots, led by Nick Seeler’s six. Not a surprise to see him leading the way in that department.

Ersson saw seven shots in each period, finishing with 20 saves on 21 shots. A few of them were testers as the Blues nearly tied the game in the dying seconds with a Brayden Schenn tip in front. But like he’s down all season, Ersson stood up strong when needed most.

Bobby Brink, Joel Farabee show chemistry

Brink was due for a goal with the way he had been playing at times this season. Farabee needed to build off a career season where he didn’t look completely back at times. The two together have shown a fair amount of chemistry that goes back to last season. They put that on display for the game-winning goal.

Capitalizing off a turnover right at center ice, the two put on a nice passing display with Scott Laughton that ended up with Brink forcing his way to the net for the goal.

That makes the Flyers’ moms 2-0-0 on their trip with the team. Guess they’re not allowed to leave, huh? The team itself will be back on the ice Saturday for a rematch with the Bruins, in Philadelphia this time.
