The Philadelphia Flyers have a lengthy history filled with plenty of franchise greats. There are the likes of Bobby Clarke, Bernier Parent, and Eric Lindros. In recent years, the Flyers may not have had much success prior to the 2025-26 season, where their young core of players helped them pick up a first-round series win over the rival Pittsburgh Penguins.
But in the 2010s, there was one player who stood out as the face of the franchise, and that was Claude Giroux. The Flyers drafted Giroux in the first round back in 2006, and he made his debut not too long after the fact. He became a seven-time All Star during his 15 years in Philadelphia, and helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2010. But with Giroux, the Flyers never really did enough to help him and the team have an easier path back to the Finals. With that, Giroux is now playing on the Ottawa Senators, and is still searching for his first Stanley Cup title.
Flyers had multiple missed opportunities to help Claude Giroux win a Stanley Cup
As mentioned earlier, Giroux helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2010, where they took on the Chicago Blackhawks. After getting through the New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Montreal Canadiens, the Flyers lost in six games to the Blackhawks in the Finals. For the Flyers, this would be their last chance competing for the Cup in the Final. In fact, they never even made it back to the Eastern Conference Finals after that Cinderella run.
After this, you would expect the Flyers to try and build around Giroux and put some legitimate stars on the roster to help their odds of competing for a Stanley Cup. But as has been the case, they relied more on their internal players developing into top players to help with that goal, instead of going all out in free agency and the trade block.
In 2012, then-Anaheim Ducks forward Bobby Ryan let it be known that he would like to join the Flyers, considering he grew up cheering for the team and lived in nearby Cherry Hill, N.J. Usually, that would sound the alarms for any team to try and negotiate a trade. For the Flyers, they opted against doing so. Granted, Ryan did express regret over saying he'd like to be traded to the Flyers. But still, wouldn't haved hurt the Flyers to make an attempt.
Back in 2015, there were rumors that the Flyers were interested in then-Colorado Avalanche center Matt Duchene. Look, getting Duchene at that time would have been great, as he was entering his prime. Those rumors were debunked, citing the lack of cap space to fit Duchene onto the roster. Still, the Flyers could have made it work somehow, someway. If they were serious about building a strong roster, they would have had Duchene on the roster at some point. Except, that never happened, as he spent time with the Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Nashville Predators during his time in the NHL.
Flyers' lackluster playoff runs ended any hopes of a Stanley Cup win for Claude Giroux
The Flyers never made it past the second round of the playoffs since they lost to the Blackhawks in the 2010 Stanley Cup Final.
The following two years, the Flyers lost in the second round to the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils, respectively. After that, they made the playoffs in four of the next eight seasons. In 2014, they lost in the first round to the New York Rangers, who went on to win the Eastern Conference title that year. 2016 saw a similar run, with the Flyers losing in the first round to the Washington Capitals. In 2018, Philadelphia lost in six games to Pittsburgh in the opening round. In 2020, the Flyers fell to the New York Islanders in the second round.
2020 was the final playoff run for Giroux in Philadelphia, as he was traded to the Florida Panthers during the 2021-22 season. After that, he signed on with Ottawa, where he still remains to this day, most recently signing a new contract with them during the summer of 2026.
It's never a great feeling when you have a franchise icon that never won a championship. Giroux was the face of the franchise during the 2010s, yet didn't have a Stanley Cup title to show for it. It will go down as an era of missed opportunities for the Flyers to build a deep roster around him.
