Some players simply struggle to make a strong impression during the preseason, and for the Philadelphia Flyers, Samu Tuomaala fell into that category.
The 22-year-old forward was one of 10 players cut from Flyers training camp in recent days.
Tuomaala appeared in last week’s 3–2 shootout win over the New York Islanders, logging 13:13 of ice time. He registered a single shot on net and was unsuccessful in his shootout attempt.
Given his experience and offensive skill set, Tuomaala’s placement among the early cuts stands out as one of the more surprising moves to date. The decision underscores both the competitiveness of camp and the organization’s high expectations for players vying to secure NHL minutes.
Shades of Victor Olofsson
Samu Tuomaala’s game bears resemblance to a young Victor Olofsson. He has the ability to carry the puck with control across the offensive blue line and create plays, while his wrist shot already carries notable velocity. Like Olofsson, Tuomaala stands at 5’11” and isn’t exactly known for his physicality, but he makes up for it in other avenues.
As Tuomaala works to refine his overall game, the next step will be expanding his arsenal. His wrist shot, while already a key element of his offensive profile, still requires polishing before it reaches true “sniper” status like Olofsson. With consistent effort and focused development, that growth remains firmly within reach.
Despite battling injuries last season, Tuomaala showed encouraging progress in another critical area: his knack for finding open ice and exploiting defensive gaps. As his skating stride sharpens and his speed continues to improve, he’s positioning himself not only as a scoring threat, but also as a playmaker capable of elevating those around him.
This combination of skills could set him apart from many of his peers. Of the players that have been cut to this point, Tuomaala probably stands the highest chance of making it to the NHL and carving out a successful career, but where would he fit in?
What’s Realistic?
During the 2023–24 season, Tuomaala registered 43 points (15 goals, 28 assists) across 69 games with the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The following year, despite missing a stretch of the schedule, he produced 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in just 46 contests with the club. The narrowing gap between games played and point production underscores his upward trajectory—a trend that suggests continued growth as he matures and gains experience.
If we can go on the record, Tuomaala projects as a middle-six forward with the potential to drive play in high-leverage situations. His offensive instincts, coupled with his vision and quick release, make him a natural fit for an elite power play unit.
As his game continues to mature, his ability to generate offense will not only be critical with the man advantage, but will also allow him to elevate his linemates at even strength. While he may not yet carry the profile of a top-line star, the combination of his scoring touch, playmaking sense, and steadily improving two-way awareness positions him as a valuable piece in the future.
