A new season is upon us as the Philadelphia Flyers kick off their 2024-25 season with a trip to Vancouver to take on the Canucks.

Each team will act as a host for the other regarding their home opener. Vancouver will travel to Philadelphia next week as the Flyers will open their home slate against the Canucks as well.

Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers have plenty to be excited about heading into a brand new season. It feels like for the first time in a long time, there is optimism. That doesn't mean that aren't any questions or concerns about this team. But it certainly seems like fans have hope about what this team can do.

That has a lot to do with Matvei Michkov. Starting with his selection two summers ago, there has been a growing thought that he could be the game-changer that Philadelphia needs. He has already flashed plenty of skill, collecting seven points in the preseason. Now that the games matter, it's going to be fun to see what he can do against full NHL lineups.

Jett Luchanko will also get his opportunity to prove to the team that he belongs in this league. Danny Briere said the team has made no decisions on whether or not this will be a nine-game trial or not. And it won't be just the offense that they're looking for. If Luchanko looks the part of an NHL player but the offense isn't necessarily there, there is still a chance he could spend the season with the Flyers. Philadelphia saw something in him and he may prove them right earlier than expected.

Flyers Projected Lineup

Matvei Michkov - Sean Couturier - Travis Konecny

Owen Tippett - Morgan Frost - Tyson Foerster

Joel Farabee - Jett Luchanko - Bobby Brink

Scott Laughton - Ryan Poehling - Garnet Hathaway

Cam York - Travis Sanheim

Erik Johnson - Jamie Drysdale

Egor Zamula - Rasmus Ristolainen

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks have already begun their season, and it came in wild fashion. Up 4-1 over the Flames in the first period on Wednesday night, Vancouver gave up four unanswered goals and tied the game late in the third to force overtime. They lost on a Connor Zary goal 1:33 into the extra period. So they'll come out guns blazing.

Brock Boeser, coming off a 40-goal campaign, had a great start to his season. He scored two of the Canucks four goals in the opening period. J.T. Miller broke out for 103 points a season ago and is looking to hit the 40 mark for the first time in his career. He scored the tying goal with under two minutes remaining, registering an assist as well. Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes had two assists.

Arturs Silovs was in the net, allowing six goals on 26 shots. So he will get the night off and Kevin Lankinen will make his Canucks debut. He recently signed a one-year deal with Vancouver as added insurance while Thatcher Demko remains sidelined.
