Flyers fall apart in third period for second straight loss
The Hurricanes pulled away in the third period, handing the Flyers their second straight loss.
To win a hockey game, you need to score more than your opponent. A pretty simple concept, right? But to do that, you have to shoot the puck at the goaltender. Turns out that wasn’t an easy thing for the Flyers to do.
After 11 shots in the first period, the Flyers only had eight the rest of the game. For reference, the Hurricanes had double-digit shots in every period. That included 17 shots in the third. Simply put, that isn’t going to get it done. Especially not against a team like Carolina.
They got this one started just 30 seconds into the game. It was a Jalen Chatfield blast from the point that originally looked like it was tipped on the way in. But the defenseman was credited with the goal.
It would remain that way throughout the rest of the period. A little over two minutes into the second, Ryan Poehling fired a rather innocent shot from just inside the point that ended up being Pytor Kochetkov. His teammate may have ended up acting as a screen up high.
The game would be tied heading into the third period. That’s where the Canes pulled away. Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal, and Jack Roslovic scored for the Hurricanes.
While Fedotov would like to have at least one of those goals back, he played rather well to keep the Flyers in the game for the first two periods. He made some acrobatic moves, including an old-fashioned two-pad stack to make some saves.
There are times that make you wonder how Fedotov is able to get back into a play. He is unorthodox in his movements and tends to be quite chaotic in net at times. He's played better recently and that's been a good sign.
Ryan Poehling scores first of the year
Sometimes all you have to do is shoot the puck on the net and you never know what can happen. Probably would've been helpful if the Flyers took that lesson seriously throughout the entire game. Poehling did and he was rewarded with his first of the season.
Coming away with the puck in the defensive zone, Nick Seeler quickly chipped it up to Poehling in transition. Poehling seemingly used Sean Walker as a screen in the offensive zone. His shot went through the legs of the Canes' defenseman, which may have blocked Kochetkov from seeing where the puck was heading. Because otherwise, it was an innocent shot from up high.
Hurricanes pull away in the third
The Hurricanes are a team that will make you pay for the mistakes you make. They are a fast and physical team that can pounce on pucks and turn them into goals.
Erik Johnson blindly threw a pass behind himself, hoping for a forward to carry the puck out of the zone. Instead, it was taken away by Aho who skated in a shot at Ivan Fedotov. The Flyers’ goaltender had made some impressive saves to that point, but he could get his arm closed in time as the puck squeezed through.
The Canes' second goal came off a face-off win in the Philadelphia zone. Dimitri Orlov fired a shot from the point as Jordan Staal was in the perfect spot to deflect it past Fedotov.
55 seconds later, a turnover by Poehling in the neutral zone led to the Hurricanes' third goal of the period. Aho carried the puck in and shot it toward the net. Roslovic ended up with it and went backhand, forehand over the pad of an outstretched Fedotov.
The Flyers have now lost two straight, though both were against high-end opponents. They'll have a chance to right the ship against the Blackhawks on Saturday. Chicago has lost five of their last six games. They will play the Panthers on Thursday night before traveling to Philadelphia.
