The Philadelphia Flyers saw their 2026 postseason run come to an end on Saturday. The devastating 3-2 overtime loss in Game 4 was a tough way to go out. But it didn’t take anything away from the tremendous effort Philly put forth this season.
The Flyers entered this season with mixed expectations. Some believed Philly could emerge as a playoff contender. Others thought it would be another year of learning and growth.
Well, it was a bit of both for Philly this season. The Flyers not only made the postseason, but they also had a valuable season of learning and growth. That’s why the 2025-26 season was a fantastic one for the Flyers, even if it ended with a crushing defeat.
The Flyers have officially emerged from their rebuild and are now ready to take the next step. The next step is to consolidate their position as consistent playoff contenders. Anyone who doesn’t believe that to be the case has ignored the talented young core leading the way.
In particular, the late-season emergence of Porter Martone is something that Flyers fans should be excited about. But it’s not just Martone who’s become a tantalizing young talent to make the leap. Alex Bump, Denver Barkey, and most recently, Jett Luchanko are all players who should provide Philly with the next wave of talent.
The future is indeed bright in Philadelphia. Even with so much talent, there’s one other major reason why the Flyers should be an even stronger team in 2026-27.
Rick Tocchet was the final piece of the pie
The mix of young and veteran talent really wasn’t enough for the Flyers to get over the hump the last couple of seasons.
The club needed a crucial piece to get over the top. And that piece was Rick Tocchet.
Tocchet was hardly an intransigent disciplinarian. He offered a balance between hard work, accountability, and support. The latter was fully on display during the Matvei Michkov saga.
The Flyers’ first-year coach provided the team with the stability it needed to develop confidence. That confidence led the team to dump the legendary Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin duo in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
While the Flyers couldn’t get past the second round this season, it doesn’t mean it will never happen. It’s tough to preach patience. Fans, especially of the diehard persuasion, want to see their team destroy the competition.
But when it comes to a club like the Flyers, it seems like it’s only a matter of time. The offseason additions this summer could mark the difference between another sour playoff exit and a shot at the promised land.
