The Philadelphia Flyers Hometown Remix jerseys might have seemed a little less innovative compared to the massive swings other teams took.
But when looking at the overall design, you can tell that the organization wasn’t looking to reinvent the wheel.
It was looking to create something new, while conserving the old, eventually leading to the "Independence edition."
The cracks and edges are sewn into the fabric of who we are.

The aim was to pay homage to the city’s importance in the United States’ history, while also giving fans a bit of a different edge.
That said, the new threads pretty much resemble the team’s current gear. The seemingly lighter shade of black with the orange trim look novel enough to ensure the jersey is actually something different.
But it’s the orange stripes on the side that give the jersey a unique look. The Liberty Bell-inspired trim is perhaps the best touch the club could have given its Hometown Remix jerseys without putting the actual bell on the jersey.
And, in fact, that’s another point. Why not use a Liberty Bell logo?
Well, it’s all about tradition. As a piece in The Athletic noted, the organization did not want to deviate from its long-standing customs.
“The primary reason the Flyers didn’t make that kind of dramatic change is simple: tradition. And respect for legendary owner Ed Snider, who would never have signed off on such a thing.”
Does that mean that the Liberty Bell logo is dead on arrival?
Well, not quite. For now, the classic Flyers logo just got a "remix" of sorts.
Flyers will roll with Liberty Bell logo as part of another campaign
At the end of the day, the Flyers will be rolling with the Liberty Bell logo. But that will be part of another marketing endeavor that the organization will push at a later time.
That’s all right. You would have to think that the team wants to be careful about pushing something that might not sit well with fans.
But at what point does the organization think about a rebranding of sorts if the Liberty Bell takes off?
Perhaps that might be something fans get to see down the line.
For now, the Hometown Remix jerseys, while hardly a mind-shocking innovation, encapsulate a delicate balance between novelty and tradition.
And, at the end of the day, that’s what the campaign is all about. Yes, the NHL and its teams want to sell jerseys. But fans can appreciate that the Flyers are not trying to shove new merch down everyone’s throats for the sake of the bottom line.
These are tasteful emblems of what the city of Philadelphia represents to American history, and the place that the Flyers hold within that specific piece of national lore.
