Flyers lose heartbreaker to Hurricanes in final seconds

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Flyers as they came within half a minute of at least one point.

It was a back-and-forth game between the Flyers and Hurricanes. The teams combined for 10 goals and saw multiple lead changes during the night.

But Carolina got the final goal that mattered as the Flyers missed out on getting at least a point by 23 seconds. The Hurricanes took this one by a final score of 6-4.

There was plenty to like about the Flyers' effort. They came back from two separate deficits and had some of their struggling forwards find the back of the net. Aleksei Kolosov allowed four goals, but not all of them were on him. The first goal was simply an incredible play by the Hurricanes. Kolosov wasn't able to play the puck on another as Tyson Foerster crashed into him. And the final goal was a mad scramble in front.

There were still some moments where it's obvious that he will need more time to develop, though. But with Sam Ersson sidelined for the time being, Kolosov will have to learn on the fly.

The Flyers got things started first as Travis Konecny got a fortunate bounce off a Matvei Michkov shot. It was a power-play goal, something Philadelphia hasn't been able to get in recent games.

But the Canes would score the next three goals, including two in 54 seconds to take a 3-1 lead. Jackson Blake scored his fourth of the year off an insane feed from Jack Drury. Eric Robinson and Jordan Martinook scored back-to-back goals.

Philadelphia didn't give up as both Owen Tippett and Morgan Frost broke their goalless droughts. For Frost, it was his first of the season. That tie game didn't last long, though, as Jack Roslovic scored 29 seconds later to restore the Canes lead.

Konecny wasn't done as he tied the game again close to midway through the period. It looked like this one was destined for overtime as neither team was willing to give an inch. But a length offensive possession for Carolina ended in a Martin Necas goal with under 30 seconds remaining. Seth Jarvis put the game away with the empty netter for the 6-4 win.

Travis Konecny collects four points in the loss

Not lost in the loss was Konecny factoring in on every goal the Flyers scored. After going three straight games without a point, Konecny finished the night with two goals and two assists.

His power-play goal in the first period came off a fortuitous bounce in front. Michkov's shot from the point hit Tippett in front before bouncing to Konecny. With a wide-open net in front of him, Konecny just needed to push it in to give the Flyers the lead.

Konecny had the primary assist on Tippett's goal. It was a nice cross-ice feed by Konecny as he could've fired the puck on the net himself. Instead, he saw Tippett skating in a fired it across. The latter wasted no time in firing it in. It was so quick that even Jim Jackson thought that a save had been made. It was a much-needed goal, not only for the Flyers but for Tippett himself.

Konecny would get the secondary assist on a goal that Frost was lucky to score. A Travis Sanheim shot hit something in front and went to Frost who had an entire net to shoot at. He missed the puck with his stick, but it glanced off his skate and slowly rolled across the line. They don't ask how it went in. But it was likely going to take a dirty or fluke goal to get Frost going. Hopefully, that does the trick.

Konecny's second goal was off a similar variety. Sean Couturier stole the puck deep in the offensive zone and passed it quickly to Konecny. Whether he whiffed on the shot or couldn't control the puck, it went off Konecny's stick and slid through the pads of the standing Pytor Kochetkov. It must've caught the Canes' goaltender off guard.

The road trip doesn't get any easier as the Flyers will face the Lightning on Thursday night.
