The Philadelphia Flyers have had a less than stellar start to the 2026-27 National Hockey League (NHL) season. They've won four of their first 16 games, which is not a great record. With their 12 points, the Flyers are just above the Columbus Blue Jackets, who sit at the bottom, of the Metropolitan Division.
Since the Flyers have had a rough start to the season, they've flown severely under the radar. Due to this, Matvei Michkov's strong start has barely been discussed.
Michkov is competing with top NHL players
In his last eight games, Michkov has scored eight goals. While it would be amazing if he was on an eight-game scoring streak, the fact that he has scored this many goals in such a short period of time is astonishing.
Michkov has scored more goals than any other player in the past two weeks of NHL hockey. Yes, that includes the current leading points recorder, Connor McDavid. In his last eight games, McDavid has scored five goals, and in his last five games, only one. While it's difficult to compare Michkov and McDavid, the fact that Michkov has more goals than the leading points scorer is phenomenal.
Michkov currently has 12 points in the Flyers' first 16 games. 10 of his points were due to goals he scored. He has the most goals of anyone on the team; the second-highest goal scorer is Trevor Zegras with four. Zegras currently leads the Flyers in points with 13, but Michkov is very close behind.
Michkov has been promoted to the top six this season, and for good reason. He continuously generates offense for the team, which is something the Flyers have been lacking this season. As the NHL steps into their second month of the season, Michkov will have to keep this offensive prowess moving.
