The Philadelphia Flyers have been taking care of business internally, signing RFAs Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale. The moves make total sense after the Leo Carlsson offer sheet didn’t go through. The cap savings allowed Zegras and Drysdale’s deals to get done without much complication.
That’s why, according to Anthony DiMarco of Daily Faceoff, the Flyers are pretty much done for the summer. Well, at least as far as a big swing goes.
“It may be unpopular, but the Flyers are likely done for the summer. They took their big swing when they offer-sheeted Leo Carlsson… there is nothing else that makes much sense right now.”
Yes, that may be true on the surface. But what if the Flyers could find something else that’s more to their liking?
That something else could be Seattle Kraken center Shane Wright. In the same discussion, DiMarco pointed out that the Kraken have been looking to move Wright, with the Flyers being a specific target.
“We know that Jason Botterill has been actively shopping center Shane Wright – the Kraken lobbied his services to the Flyers earlier in the summer – but have yet to find the right deal.”
So, it seems that a Flyers-Kraken deal comes down to the pieces involved. It’s not that the Flyers don’t think Wright isn’t worthwhile. He’s just not worthwhile at the current price point the Kraken are seeking.
But what if the Kraken were to come down from their asking price? Would that change anything?
Flyers may land Wright if price tag changes
Now, DiMarco didn’t get into the specifics of the price tag for Wright. But you have to think the Kraken want something big in return. We know that they’ve been gunning for a big-time scorer. Seattle made a massive push at the NHL trade deadline for Artemi Panarin.
The Kraken also pushed to get Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars. Robertson, unfortunately, turned down Seattle’s $15 million AAV offer.
So, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear the Kraken wanting someone who could put the puck in the back of the net. Could that someone be Matvei Michkov? Perhaps it was Trevor Zegras?
Either way, asking for Michkov or Zegras might be a non-starter for the Flyers. That scenario, of course, would have been different if the Ducks had not chosen to match the Carlsson offer sheet.
Had the Flyers kept Carlsson, they might have been unable to sign Zegras. In that case, the deal would have made more sense.
For now, I wouldn’t entirely rule out a Flyers-Kraken trade. Seattle really wants to move on from Wright, and Wright is open to leaving. So, it might just be that Seattle gives up and makes something happen with Philly.
