The Philadelphia Flyers are having the worst follow-up to a promising season imaginable. After making it to the second round of the playoffs, the Flyers are eight games into the season, and don't have a single win yet. With an 0-5-3 record, the Flyers are in dead last place in the Eastern Conference with just three points. Yes, even behind the Detroit Red Wings, to show how bleak of a start Philadelphia has had.
Flyers fans are understandably frustrated, considering this was the same roster that overachieved last season and made it to the second round of the playoffs. There have been calls for head coach Rick Tocchet's job, but it doesn't appear the Flyers are heading in that direction this early into the season. But what about the players? Will they be safe? Or will general manager Danny Briere begin a fire sale at some point ahead of the trade deadline?
It appears that there is one player that teams are interested in if the Flyers continue to struggle this season.
Rival teams reportedly interested in Tyson Foerster trade with Flyers' season off to rough start
Sportsnet's Frank Seravalli revealed in a recent article that teams are monitoring Foerster as a potential trade target if the Flyers can't turn their season around.
"While vultures circle the Philadelphia Flyers amid their franchise-worst start, rival teams have been wondering: Is there any way we could get our hands on Tyson Foerster," writes Seravalli. "He seems to be on a list of untouchables. Really impressive player."
When a team struggles like the Flyers have, the questions surrounding players' futures and if they will be placed on the trade block will surface. it comes with the territory. That is what the Flyers are already dealing with, in less than 10 games into the new season.
But as Servalli mentions, Foerster "seems to be on a list of untouchables" in regards to players they'd willingly trade. There's still plenty of time for the Flyers to turn things around, but this eight-game stretch has been incredibly brutal and a path out of it could be challenging.
Tyson Foerster: from contract extension to trade candidate?
Foerster solidified himself as the Flyers' top goal scorers in his short time with the team. Back during the 2024-25 season, Foerster had the second-most goals on the Flyers with 25, just behind Matvei Michkov, who had 26. Last season, Foerster scored 13 goals in 29 games, where he was limited due to an arm injury.
This sesaon, Foerster has just one goal to his credit through eight games. However, he's been on the ice when goals are scored, albeit by the other team, as he holds a minus-8 plus/minus rating.
For Foerster, it's obvious the Flyers have plans for him to be a part of their future. Back in July, the Flyers announced that they were signing him to an eight-year, $56.8 million contract extension. He is under contract through the 2034-35 season.
So, it would be quite the pivot for the Flyers if they were to trade Foerster. However, he truly feels like an untouchable player on the Flyers roster. Again, it's still incredibly early in the season. There's a chance they can head in the right direction, stack some wins, and make it back into the playoff picture. For now, they will continue to deal with trade rumors if the losses pile up.
